Grocery Shopping at Westside Foods

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? We're at Westside Foods. It's the grocery store by our house. I  l-o-v-e our grocery store. We buy food here. Ravan  is the owner. He's really nice. He always says 'Hello' when we come in the store.

The store is full of all kinds of good things to eat.  There is porridge and chocolate cookies and soap. We don't eat soap. Oh. There is milk and cheese, too. I drink chocolate milk and I eat cheese.

There are lots of farms all over Essex County. The  people who live on farms are called farmers, you know. Farmers grow food. They bring their fresh food to the store.''Know what?  Farmers around here grow wallermelons. I l-o-v-e wallermelons, don't  you? I could eat wallermelons all day long. They're as yummy as Smarties and licorices.

Yummy is one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. The other food groups are sticky, sweet and nasty. I have brocollis and sauerkrauts. They're nasty. I don't want to  eat them at all. I hold my nose and take two bites so I can be a good example for Chance. One day he will have teeth and he won't drink condensed owls' milk out of a bottle anymore.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Help with the grocery shopping. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go grocery shopping together! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance in Chatham

Know what? We're in Chatham. That's an hour from our house on Sparkle Road. We go to Chatham on VIA Rail sometimes. Sometimes we ride in Peter's Chrysler Neon. I can spell Chatham. C-H-A-T-H-A-M. The second 'H' is silent. We don't really need it. Sometimes people say, "What the H?" They need an 'H'. I think we should take it out of Chatham and give it to them. Oh! Wait! we could give it to all those poor, starving children in Belgium!

Chance and me are at the Sugar Fix Candy Store. That's at 235 King Street. Tina and Tom got l-o-t-s of candy! This sucker weighs almost two kilos! That's more than Chance weighs. He's a newborn cubby, you know. If that big sucker fell on Chance, he'd be hurt!

Tom and Tina's store is right across the street from the Capitol Theatre. They got everything! They got sugar-free chocolate, too. They got Smarties and gummy worms. Know what? They got gummy bears, too. I didn't know there are gummy bears, did you?

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Chatham and get some chocolates at Tom and Tina's store! Okay! Over and out!"

Bouncy Castle

He climbs way high on things and can't get down. I have to rescue him. He takes off his diaper, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are playing on the Bouncy Slide. We're playing in the Bouncy Castle, too. There's a Bouncy Pool with a Bouncy Palm tree. We sure are having fun! I could bounce all day, you know. Bouncing is one of the funnest things to do.

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and bounce with us! We can bounce all day together! Okay! Over and out!"

I Want to be a Fire Fighter!

Know what? Chance and me are way up here inside a big red fire truck. It belongs to the City of Windsor. I'm pretending to drive. Chance is my lookout. He makes little squeaky noises when he sees things in front of us on the road. The siren is really loud and the red lights flash, too. Everybody gets out of the way when a fire truck passes by!

Fire fighters have very important jobs. I know what they do. They go to fires and put them out with big hoses filled with water. The job can be dangerous, you know. Fire fighters are very brave.

I'm five. I'm big enough to wear a fire helmet. The nice fireman let me try it on. A helmet keeps my head safe. Chance is such a wee little thing he fits right inside his helmet. Newborn cubbies aren't big enough to be fire fighters. I think you have to be at least five.

I know! I'll ask Miss Jackie. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. She knows everything. I think she is a princess.

Oh.

Obey the rules. Don't start any fires. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can visit the fire truck together!  Okay! Over and out!"

Olde Sandwich Towne Festival

Know what? This weekend is the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. It's lots of fun. We talked to the fire fighters and got to ride in the big red fire truck. There's good food and good music and a bouncy castle and yard sales and BMX bike stunts and music and contests for the best sandwich and the best chilli and there's root beer and Smarties and chocolate cake. I l-o-v-e chocolate cake. It's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

James even got interviewed by the CBC.

Chance and me are riding a BMX mountain bike. One of the guys let us ride on it. That was nice of him.  It's really fast. Did you know the wheels cost $600 each? That would buy a lot of Smarties, you know. I'm wearing a helmet 'cuz I want to keep my head safe. James says it's a 'brain bucket.' He often says silly things like that. Chance took his helmet off, already. He took off his diaper and his running shoes, too. He doesn't know any better, he's just a wee little cubby. He really is a handful!

Riding a fast bike is really fun. Look what we can do! The guys are really talented. They can jump up in the air on their bikes. It's fun to watch them. They do all kinds of tricks and they never get hurt. I can't wait to go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre and learn how to ride my bike just like the guys do.

Nicole took the pictures. She's one of our bestest buddies. She's pretty good with a camera, you know. You can see more of her work at www.ncsphotography.com.
Oh.

Come to the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can ride bikes together!  Okay! Over and out!"

Canada Post

Know what? Chance and me are hanging out at the Post Office. I know what the Post Office does. It's where we take letters and packages to send to our friends and buddies who live too far away from us. It is a nice way to keep in touch.

We buy stamps and put them on our letters and packages so they are ready to go visit you!  If I had  stamps on me, I could come to your house, you know. A nice Postie would bring me to your door.   Stamps are fun to collect. They have pictures on them, like Queen Elizabeth and the Canada flag and polar bears, too!

Oh.

Keep in touch with your buddies and friends. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can write letters and take them to Canada Post! Okay! Over and out!"

Labour Day

Know what? Today is a holiday. It's Labour Day. I know what labour is. It's work. There's many different kinds of work, you know. A captain pilots a ship. A fire fighter gets kittens and cubs out of trees. A farmer grows tomatoes. A nurse looks after sick people. The bus driver takes us to the shopping centre. Chance and me work. We have jobs. We help take out the trash and put it in the blue dumpster. We help our buddy James cook food. After our bath, we help clean out the bathtub. James says we're pretty good helpers.

Oh.

Say 'thank you' to all the nice people who work for you. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us!  Okay! Over and out!"
