Bobby Orr Knees

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? I'm trying on a Calgary Flames jersey. It's too big for Chance to wear. He'd just get lost inside it. The jersey has sequins on it. That's 'cuz it's going to in a play, Bobby Orr Knees .

James wrote the play. He's a playwright. That's a person who writes plays. I know what a play is. It's a story acted out by actors. I could be an actor, you know.  Our buddy Jay made the jersey. It sparkles.

Bobby Orr Knees will be at Mackenzie Hall in November and December. It's a play about hockey. It's funny and we laugh.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. So kind deeds for neighbours and friends. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house ! We can be good citizens together! Okay! Over and out!"

Closet, The Play

Know what? We're going to Mackenzie Hall tonight. That's on Sandwich Street. I think it's a castle. We're going to Mackenzie Hall tonight to see a play that our buddy James wrote. It's a funny play, called Closet. Our buddies Joey the Elder, Joey the Younger and Clinton are in the play. They're actors. I could be an actor you know. That's a fun job.  I could be a director, too. I would say, "Let's take it from the top of page 24."

Chance and me get to stay up way past our bedtime to see the play. I know Chance will fall asleep 'cuz he's a wee little thing. Newborn cubbies sleep a lot, you know.  I'm bringing Chance's favourite green afghan blankie and a bottle of condensed owls' milk for him, too.  Theatre is lots of fun, you know.

Oh.

Come to Mackenzie Hall and see the play.  Oh! Wait! Come the the Great Auditorium and sit with us! The show starts at eight o'clock. Chance and me will save you a seat! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance: Cub Reporters!

Know what? Chance and me are at the Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre. We watch the Crosstown Players rehearse their show. It's called Closet. It starts on Tuesday. They're pretty good actors, you know.

John Lewis is here. I know who John is. He's a reporter for A Channel News. He talks to the cast. The cast is our buddies Joey the Younger, Joey the Elder and Clinton. They will be on TV. John asks them questions. They're very smart and they know lots of things to say.

When he is done talking to our buddies, John asks Chance and me questions. I told him that I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre and Miss Jackie is my teacher.  I count to ten for him in French. I tell him the rules for Hide and Seek. K tell him Chance is my newborn cubby brother someone left on our doorstep. Chance can't talk but he makes squeaky noises when he's happy. John asked me if I wanted to be an actor when I grow up. I could be an actor or a firefighter but I might want to be a cub reporter, too.

See,  We're cub reporters! We're asking John questions.

Charles: Do you like Smarties?

John: Oh, yes. I l-o-v-e Smarties. They're one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

Charles: Do you eat the red ones last?

John: Oh, yes. Always. The Smarties Song tells us that.

Charles: Thank you, John for this important reminder. This is us, Charles and Chance, handsome cub reporters, live for A Channel News . Back to you, Jim.

Oh.

Be nice to people. Help your buddies and friends. Good citizens get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can play A Channel cub reporter! We can interview Peter Mansbridge and Lloyd Robertson , too! Okay! Over and out!"

Painting Pictures

Know what? Chance and me paint pictures of ourselves. It's lots of fun. We make pictures of us playing hockey. I'm cub Gretzky and Chance is Cub Crosby. We make pictures of us in the bathtub playing with our rubber duckies in our purple bubble bath. We l-o-v-e bath time. We make pictures of us decorating the Christmas tree. Chance climbed right to the top of the tree. He wanted to be the angel on top. I had to say, "My son! Come down from there this instant!"

All our paintings are at Nick and Aveline's store. They're really nice. Nick has a Mohawk haircut. I want one, too.  Their store is called 1976. It's on Sandwich Street right by the wine shop and Spicoli's Barley Bin. I hope you come to see our pictures. I know! Yyou can paint with us! That would be fun. We could eat peanut butter and licorice sandwiches, you know. They're yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. Chance tries to eat the paint but he's not supposed to. We don't eat paint. Paint isn't in the Canada Food Guide. He's just a wee little thing. He'll know better when he's older, like me.

I learned how to paint at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Miss Jackie is my teacher. I think she is a princess 'cuz she lives at Mackenzie Hall and that's a really big castle on Sandwich Street.

Oh.

Do good deeds. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and paint with us! We can have fun together! Okay! Over and out!"

Countdown to Canada Day

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road in Olde Sandwich Towne. That's in Windsor. Windsor is in O Canada. I learned that at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Miss Jackie is my teacher. I live with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? This is a picture I painted of Chance and me. I named the picture. It's called Rub-a-dub-dub Two Cubs in the Tub. That's Chance and me. We're bear cubs. We're playing in the bathtub. We l-o-v-e to play in the water. We got purple soap that makes bubbles. We love to splash. We play with our fire trucks and our yellow rubber duckies.

Canada Day is coming. That's on July 1st. That's my birthday, too! I love Canada Day and my birthday. We get to eat wallermellon! I l-o-v-e wallermellon. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.

Do you know the song Rubber Ducky ? It's one of my favouritest songs. We sing it. Well, I sing it. Chance doesn't talk, yet. He's too newborn. He's so newborn he only drinks chocolate owls' milk out of his bottle. He doesn't even have a tail! Chance makes little squeaky noises while I sing. That means he's happy.

I know! When you come to our house, you can sing Rubber Ducky with us! Miss Jackie taught the song to us. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. I think she's a Princess. She lives at Mackenzie Hall, you know. It's a castle. You know the words, don't you?

OH!
Rubber Ducky
Your the one
You make bath time
Lots of fun!
Rubber Ducky
I'm awfully fond of you! (bobobodeo)

Rubber Ducky
Joy of joy
When I squeeze you you make noise
Rubber Ducky
You're my very best friend its true.

Every Day
When I make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yella
And chubby

And chubby
Rubba dub dubby!

Rubber ducky your so fine
And I'm lucky that your mine
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond
Of you!

Guess what? I climbed up here on top of the fountain in front of Canada Post. I don't know where the water went but it will come back. Chance and me l-o-v-e to play in the fountain. It's really fun, especially on hot, hot days. We can get soaking wet and cool off. Queen Elizabeth is in Canada. She's the boss of almost everybody except the Knighted States. She's our buddy. Maybe she will come to our house and splash in the water with us! We can splash in money, too!

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Stay cool on hot summer days and play in the water.  Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! .We can play in the water and we can eat wallermelon, too! Okay! Over and out!"

Chef Charles and Chef Chance

Know what? We're looking in the cookbook. We're helping James make yummy foods. We help him teach gourmet vegan cooking classes at Mackenzie Hall. That's on the next block from our house. We can ride to Mackenzie Hall on our bicycles but we have to look both ways before we cross Mill Street. A big car or truck could run over us if we don't watch carefully, you know. Mackenzie Hall is really big. It looks like a castle. Oh! What if my teacher Miss Jackie lived at Mackenzie Hall? If she did, she'd be a princess!

I know what vegan means. It means no meat, no eggs, no dairy and no snakes. Definitely no snakes. I don't think snakes are in the Canada Food Guide. I hope not. That's different from Cassidy, our bunny rabbit friend. Bunny rabbits only eat vegetables. They're vegetabletarians.

Know what? James writes cookbooks. Cookbooks have recipes in them. Recipes tell us how to make yummy things to eat. He says we're gonna make strawberry ice cream, buffalo wings, butter tofu, pate de faux gras, mushroom quiche, cashew loaf, chick peas Kashmiri, Miraculous Whip, mock Cheddar cheese,  cashew milk and cashew cream. That's a lot of yummy food. We get to make gluten kritters! I l-o-v-e gluten kritters. They're really yummy. We like to help James. He says that good helpers are good citizens.

Oh.

It's fun to help cook stuff! This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Help cook. Then you can eat really yummy vegan food. Don't eat snakes, okay? Oh! Wait! I'm gonna ask James if we can make a little bit extra and send some yummy vegan food to those poor starving children in Belgium!  I know! Come over to our house and cook with us! We can stir things together. I'll share the spoon with you! Okay! Over and out!"

Speedy Ca$h

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's forgetful and really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I have to help him remember. He went to Canada Post this morning. Canada Post isn't even open on Sundays! Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Saturday night Chance and me went to Mackenzie Hall to see S eedy Ca$h. It's a play. I know what a play is. It's a story that is acted out. It's as much fun as reading. I love plays. James says it's theatre.  James is in S eedy Ca$h. He says things that make people laugh. Our buddies Jay and Joey and Aaron and Chris are in the play, too. They make everybody laugh, too. We laughed right out loud! Chance doesn't really laugh 'cuz he's too little. He makes squeaky noises when he's happy. He made a lot of squeaky noises during the play. He took off his diaper and tried to climb on stage. I said, "Come down here this instant, my son!" I had to go get him down. He's a real handful, you know.

After the play we all went to Rock Bottom. I got to sit with Kathryn and Brian. Then I sat between Sarah and Shannon. Mark tickled Chance's ears and made him laugh. We got to sit with Wayne and Rob and Darryl and Chris and Elizabeth. They are all pretty good buddies, you know.

Know what? I got to drink root beer out of my sippy cup with Spiderman on it. Chance got to drink root beer out of his bottle. We l-o-v-e root beer. Good citizens get to drink root beer. It's yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. I'm glad we're good citizens.

We got home at midnight! That's really, really late. I never stayed up so late before. James heard our bedtime prayers and tucked us in for the night. I fell asleep before he finished reading our bedtime story 'cuz my eyes wouldn't stay open anymore. I am sure he said, "Good night, my handsome bear cubs. Sweet dreams, my Sons of Windsor. Sleep well, my Princes of Ontario." I am sure he tickled our ears and kissed our noses, too. James always does that.

This is me Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be nice to people. Smile and laugh when you're at the theatre.  Then you can come to Rock Bottom with us and drink root beer. Over and zzzzzzzzz."

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's old and can't remember things like where he put the chequebook, so I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are going to see a play on Saturday night at Mackenzie Hall. That's a theatre.  James is an actor in the play. This is Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens! Eat Smarties and help people today. Over and out!"

Chance is a Handful

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy,  James. He is forgetful and old. He says he's older than dirt. That's pretty old. , I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after him, too.

Know what? Yesterday we went to Mackenzie Hall to see our friends and buddies. Chance jumped out of  James' backpack and landed in the middle of Sandwich Street. Cars were going very fast and they had to drive around him. I was scared. James rescued Chance. He's too little to know when he's in danger. Now he's hiding and I found him. "My son!" I said, "It is not a good thing to hide in the fridge." Know what? Chance is a real handful. It's not easy to look after him. It's a full-time job. I'd better get him out of here and warm him up. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be a good citizen. Look after your little brother. Over and out!"

Mackenzie Hall

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa  James. He's really old. I have to look after him. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark.

Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's so newborn he doesn't even have any teeth. He drinks chocolate owls' milk out of a bottle. He's a wee little thing. I look after him, too.

Know what? I'm sitting on the steps at Mackenzie Hall. It's the city's cultural centre. That's on the next block from my house. Chance thinks he's hiding but I know where he is. He's right behind me. He thinks he's invisible when he closes his eyes. If I turn my head I can see him and then I'll holler, "Where's my handsome bear cub?" Then he will make happy little squeaky noises when I tickle his ears and kiss his nose and he will squeak some more.

Then we will find Grandpa James. He's inside. Maybe we can go to visit Miss Wendy and Mr. Ricky and Mr. Sam and get some Smarties at Mac's Milk. Yeah. Good idea! I l-o-v-e Smarties and I always eat the red ones last. It's a rule, you know. Okay. We gotta go, now. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, 'Be good citizens. Eat your red Smarties last! Over and out!"

Justice is Served

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy,  James. He's old and forgetful. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark.  I have to look after him. Oh.Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after him, too. We're a family. Families look after each other.

Know what? I'm in the court room at Mackenzie Hall. That's a BIG building a block away from our house. I'm in the witness box. I put my paw on the Bible and I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me, God. The Crown Prosecutor will ask me questions. Then the Defense Councillor will ask me questions. I will tell them the truth. That makes me a good citizen.

I bet the judge will give me  gummy worms or Smarties afterward. I will say, "My Lord, may I have Smarties and root beer? All those questions made me hungry." And the judge will say, "Charles, you may have licorice and peanut butter sandwiches, too!" I will say, "Thank you, My Lord." Maybe  James and Chance can have some with me. Oh, wait! Chance is too little to eat Smarties. He doesn't even have any teeth. I know! "My Lord, may my little brother Chance have a bottle of condensed owls' milk with Smarties smushed up in it?" I am sure the judge will say 'yes.' Okay. I gotta go, now. Be good citizens and tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you, God! This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Over and out!"

Come on Down!

Hi. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub. I live on Sparkle Road with James. He's my buddy. I look after him 'cuz he's old and forgetful. Look at me! I'm way up here!

Know what? The Olde Sandwich Towne Festival starts today.  James will be in a movie at Mackenzie Hall. We got seats--front and centre--for this. I like to eat licorice and popcorn at the movies. I sure hope there's gummy worms, too. No. Wait. Smarties. Yeah. I want to eat Smarties during the movie. It's hard to see in the dark. I hope I save all the red Smarties for last.

There's lots of things to do all weekend. We will have fun. Know what else is fun? Looking at my baby pictures. I never knew I was so small. I want a baby brother. I climbed up on James' lap and asked if we can go to Zellers and pick one out. James just hugs me, kisses my nose and laughs. He says, "Fat chance! Oh, Charles, you're a card."  I'm not a card. I'm a bear cub. I'm five. My birthday is on Canada Day but that's a long time from now. I like being five. I can climb really high and dig really big holes in the back yard.

Okay. It's time for breakfast. We're having porridge with gummy worms. I l-o-v-e that. If I had a baby brother I'd teach him to eat porridge and gummy worms. I gotta go. See you at the festival. Bye for now! This is me, Charles, saying over and out!

Sliding

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. Sparkle Road is right near Sandwich Street in Olde Sandwich Towne. That's part of Windsor.

Look at me! I'm at Mackenzie Hall. I found a new game to play. I climb up the stairs and slide down the banister. I holler, "Whee!" on the way down. Then I climb the stairs and do it all over again. This is a fun game. It's almost as much fun as riding my blue bike with the Canada flag on it and digging holes in the backyard.

Know what? All this sliding makes me hungry. I'm gonna ask James to go with me to Mac's and we can get some gummy worms. No. Wait. Maybe we'll get a box of Smarties. We lick them and put them on our faces and make Smarties tattoos. We can share them but we have to eat the red ones last. That's rule number two when you eat Smarties. Yeah. That's what we'll do. Okay. I gotta go. Hope you get to eat Smarties today. Don't forget to lick them and put them on your face. That's fun! Bye for now. This is Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Over and out!"

Judge Charles

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. I'm five, you know. I'm a big bear, now. I'm not a little cubby, anymore.  It's my job to look after James ' cuz he needs me.

Look at me! I'm in the courtroom at Mackenzie Hall. Guess what? I'm Judge Charles. I know what judges do. Judges sentence bad citizens to serve time in Her Majesty's Royal Canadian hoosegow. Hoosegow means jail. I'm a good judge. I say, "Order in the court!" I say, "Will the Crown please approach the bench." That's pretty good, eh. Maybe I will get my own TV show one day on the CBC. Oh. Wait. I hear James hollering, "Who's a handsome bear cub? Who's a Son of Windsor? Where is my Prince of Ontario?" That's me! Charles!  Okay. I better get down from here and go find James so he can tickle my ears, kiss my nose and make me laugh right out loud. Be good citizens or you will wind up in front of me. This court is adjourned for a 15-minute Smarties break.  Bye for now!
