Bear Hugs

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I'm five. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. Oh. Wait. Chance lives with us, too. Chance is a newborn cubby I found on our doorstep. Now he's my little brother. I look after him, too.

Chance sleeps a lot and drinks lots condensed owls' milk out of a bottle. He poos in his diaper. We have fun--except when he poos. Then he's stinky and we have to give him a bath in the kitchen sink. Know what? Chance loves to hug and lick my nose. I like to give him big 'ole bear hugs, too. We hug  James. Bear hugs are good for us.  James says we need at least six good hugs a day to stay well.

Know what? Hugs are just like Smarties. The more I get, the more I want. I wonder if there are red hugs. You know the Smarties rule, you gotta eat the red ones last. I wonder what colour a hug is? I'll ask  James. He knows everything.

Okay. We gotta go. We're gonna go outside and climb something. Chance is just a wee little thing but he can already climb pretty high. He can't talk 'cuz he's too little. Chance makes squeaky noises when he's happy and squawky ones when he's hungry or needs his diaper changed. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be a good citizen and give someone a big 'ole bear hug today.  over and out!"

Naming Cubby

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's old and forgetful, so I have to look after him. He used to look after me when I was a cubby.

Know what? Someone left a newborn cubby in a basket on our doorstep. I think it was God 'cuz I prayed for a little brother. Cubby is really tiny. He doesn't have any teeth and he doesn't even have a tail! Cubby can't talk. He makes squeaky noises when he's happy and he makes little squawky noises when he's not happy, like when he poos in his diaper.

Every time I asked James if I could have a little brother, he would laugh, tickle my ears, kiss my nose and say, "Fat chance, Charles. You're a handful." Now, James says we can keep cubby. I get to name him. Know what Cubby's name is? It's Chance. Yeah. His name is Chance 'cuz James always said, "Fat chance" when I asked for a brother. Chance means "lucky" in French. We're lucky to have him. Now we're a family of three! There's me, Charles, Chance the cubby and James.

I will be a really good brother and teach Chance everything like how to make peanut butter and licorice sandwiches. I will teach him to eat wallermelons and Smarties. Oh. Wait! We will climb trees and dig holes in the back yard. Know what? I get to feed Chance his breakfast. He drinks condensed owls' milk out of a bottle. I put peanut butter in the bottle, too. I sure hope he likes it! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where's my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario?" That's us, Charles and Chance! We're gonna go find him so he can tickle our ears, kiss our noses and make us laugh right out loud. Well, I'll laugh out loud. Chance will make happy, squeaky noises. This is us, Charles and Chance, saying, 'over and out!"

More Newborn Cubby Pictures

Hi. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub. I live with my buddy,  James on Sparkle Road.

Look at me! These are pictures of me when I was just a newborn cubby! I was really tiny. James says I tried to climb up on the pot and I fell into the porridge. I didn't know I liked porridge when I was a cubby. I bet a needed a bath after that! I used to bath in the kitchen sink but now I'm too big for that.

Know what? I don't wear diapers anymore. That's because I'm five. Cubs don't need diapers when they're five. My birthday is on Canada Day. We get fireworks and wallermelons.

I should have a baby brother. Yeah. I'm gonna ask if we can get me a brother. I wonder where they come from. Maybe we can get one at Simpson-Sears. No. Wait. Zeller's. We got lots of Club Z points. Or, we can get me a baby brother on the Internet. Yeah!

We're having porridge for breakfast with gummy worms. I can smell it. It smells good. l-o-v-e gummy worms. They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. I'm going to eat all my porridge but I'm not going to fall in the pot! If I had a baby brother I'd teach him how to eat porridge and Smarties. Okay, I gotta go eat. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub, saying 'Over and out!"
