Surprise Visitors

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. He doesn't have a tail, yet. He doesn't even have any teeth. Chance just drinks owls' milk out of his bottle.  He makes little squeaky noises when he's happy and little squawky noises when he's hungry or has to poo.  I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? We got surprise visitors. I love surprises!  Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Terry came to our house! They live in British Columbia. That's pretty far from our house. I know where British Columbia is. It's in O Canada. I can show you on the map. It's the first province on the left. We had fun with Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Terry. They kissed our noses and tickled our ears. We went out to eat. Chance got apple juice. I got chocolate milk and a bendy straw. We played games and we shared a box of Smarties, too.

When Grandpa Terry and Grandma Bonnie left our house, they got on a plane to fly to Newfoundland and Labrador. That's in O Canada, too. I know where Newfoundland and Labrador is. It's the first province on the right. Miss Jackie taught us all about  in jogfree class at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Good citizens get to eat Smarties and drink chocolate milk with a bendy straw. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can have fun together! Okay! Over and out!"

I Can Hear You Loud and Clear!

I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what we're doing? We're getting our hearing tested at the Health Centre. We're in the sound booth. I put on the headphones and I push a button when I can hear a sound. Chance is getting his ears tested, too.

Know what? We should never put Q-Tips in our ears. That can hurt them. Doctor El Breki says, "Never put anything smaller than your paw in your ear, Charles." He's right.  I don't wanna hurt my ears!

Chance can hear really good. He's got really little ears 'cuz he's a newborn cubby. Chance sat very still while he got his ears tested. Chance's ears work fine.

My ears are bigger. That's 'cuz I'm five. I'm a growing bear cub.  Know what? My ears need helpers.  I got fitted with hearing aids by Deena and Heather. One for each ear! I can hear! Loud and clear!  I didn't know the dryer makes a noise when it goes 'round and 'round. I didn't know Chance makes really loud snory noises when he naps. Water makes noise when it comes out of the tap, too! There are lots and lots and lots of noises I didn't know about! I like my new hearing aids. Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna listen to everything and see what kind of noises there are! I l-o-v-e noises!

I will tell you a secret.  I think Deena and Heather are princesses.

Oh.

Oh! Get your ears checked. You can hear a lot of things if your ears need helpers. I can hear Smarties crunch when I chew on them and I can hear root beer make fizzy noises in the can!

Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We climb up high in the sugar maple and eat peanut butter and licorice sandwiches. I will show you my hearing aids! Okay! Over and out!"

Eating Rotis at Coconut Grove

I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Guess where we are! We're at Coconut Grove. That's a roti shop in T.O. I l-o-v-e rotis. They're one of my favouritest things to eat. Rotis are in Canada's Food Guide, you know. They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups.

This is our buddy, Miss Sandra. She makes the rotis at Coconut Grove. Know what I think? I think Miss Sandra makes happiness. Happiness is a roti. I will tell you a secret. I think Miss Sandra is a princess.

Miss Sandra makes jerk chicken and oxtail soup, too. She has lots of good things to eat.

Today I am eating a chick pea roti. I know where rotis come from. They come from the West Indies. That's in West India, you know. It's a big place. Some rotis come from Trinidad and Tobago.  I know where my roti is going. It's going to go in my mouth. Look out, roti! I'm gonna put scotch bonnet pepper sauce on you and eat you all up!

We get to drink pop with our rotis. I got pineapple pop. Chance got ginger beer. It's not really beer, you know. It's made from ginger. Pop and roti. James says it's a party for your mouth. It's true!

Oh.

Be kind to your friends and neighbours. Then you can eat eat rotis and drink ginger beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Coconut Grove and visit Miss Sandra. We can eat rotis! Okay! Over and out!"

Toronto Police: To Serve & Protect

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are in Toronto. We're sitting on a police cruiser. Cruiser is another word for car.

The police in Toronto have really big cars and they have some wee little newborn cars, too. I'm too little to drive now but I will drive one day. I would drive really fast and make the siren go and flash the red and blue lights. "Look out, good citizens!" I'd holler real loud. "Look out! Constable Charles and Constable Chance comin' through!"

I know what police do. They serve and protect. They have an important job. Their job is to make Toronto a safe for boys and girls to live. Grownups, too. Oh, wait! Police constables make Toronto safe for bear cubs, too.  The constables stop bad people from doing bad things. People who do bad things get arrested. They go to the Don Jail. They have to go to court. The judge decides if they're guilty or innocent. People who do bad things aren't good citizens, you know. Good citizens obey the rules.

I could be a constable when I grow up, you know. I could help make Toronto a safe place to live. People who live in Toronto are called Torontonians.  Toronto is pretty big. Six million people live in T.O. It's Canada's biggest city. It's way bigger than Windsor. That's where me and Chance live. Windsor is the centre of the universe and the nicest part of Detroit. That's what I learned at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre.

I
We have police in Windsor. Know what? There weren't any murders in Windsor last year. That's 'cuz the police serve and protect.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be nice to friends and neighbours. Good citizens get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can play police. We can serve and protect! Okay! Over and out!"

Mexican Grill

I look after Chance, too. He's a handful! Chance always takes off his diaper and then he climbs way high on things and then he can't get down. I have to help him.

Know what? Chance and me don't have to go to Mexico to eat. We got yummy Mexican food right here in Windsor. It's one of my favouritests foods to eat.  I l-o-v-e Mexican food. It's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide. Marion is the nice lady who served us. She's the boss of the Mexican Grill. Know what? I think she might be a princess.

There's lots and lots of good things to eat on the menu. I can read the menu all by myself, you know. That's 'cuz I'm five and I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's on Sandwich Street.  I want to eat everything. James says, "Charles! Calm down, my son. You must be as hungry as a bear!" I am, you know.  I'm a growing bear cub.

Chance is too little to eat Mexican food. He doesn't have any teeth, yet. He just drinks owls' milk out of his bottle. Chance thinks my enchiladas are pretty. He licks them and makes little squeaky noises. When he makes squeaky noises, that means he's happy.

It's hard to choose what to eat. They got lots of vegetabletarian foods. That's good for vegetabletarians. Bunny rabbits don't eat meat. They're vegetabletarians, you know. Finally I decide. I'm gonna eat the red and green enchiladas. They look yummy. There's salad and rice and refried beans, too.

Next time I think I'm gonna eat tacos. No. Wait! I think I want fajitas. Maybe I'm gonna have tortillas.  I'm just going to eat everything. Yeah. Then I'll be stuffed. Really stuffed.

Oh.

Be kind to your neighbours and friends. Do good deeds.  Then you can go to the Mexican Grill and eat Mexican food. You can have Smarties and drink root beer, too. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and we can go to the Mexican Grill with us! Okay! Over and out!" Ole!
