The Pro Bono Open House at the University of Windsor

Chance and me speak to law students at the University of Windsor. Testing, testing, one, two, three. Chance wants to lick the microphone. He's too newborn to know you can't eat microphones!
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Guess where we are? We're at the University of Windsor. That's a really big school, you know. I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre on Sandwich Street. Then I will go to General Brock School. After that I will go to Forster High School. Then I can go to the University of Windsor. That's a lot of school! I'll be really old!

We're in the moot court.  Today is Pro Bono Launch Day. That means for the good. I know what good is. Good is doing what's right, even when it's not easy to do. Grandpa James says that doing right builds character. I don't think building character is like building stuff with my Legos. Grandpa James says character is invisible to us but everyone else can see it.

The students at the Pro Bono Society volunteer to help groups like the Crosstown Players. We're glad they want to help us. Chance and me love the theatre. Singing and dancing and acting are fun, you know.

The law students are thoughtful. Grandpa James says they are investing in our community. That's a good thing, you know.
Chance and me are get our picture taken with Ms. Anna (left). She's the boss of Career Services. Gordon (centre) and Matt (right) are the bosses of the Pro Bono Society. They're all really nice. Know what? They all like pizza!

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Volunteer in your community. That builds character. When you do good things you get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! We get to go to Spago on Erie Street and eat Italian food, too! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the university and volunteer together! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance Drive a Police Car

Sergeant Steve is an officer. That means he's a policeman. Policemen and Policewomen have important jobs. They keep everyone in Windsor safe and peaceful. Sometimes their jobs are dangerous. We're lucky to have brave police, you know.

I could be a police officer when I grow up, you know. There's a special school for the job. I would like that. I could serve and protect boys and girls and grownups and bear cubs, too. Know what? Some officers don't drive cars. They drive police boats up and down the Detroit River.

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go see Sergeant Steve and ride with him in the police car! Okay! Over and out!"

Cubcert! Charles and Chance Sing at Children's Fest

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Look at Chance and me! We're on stage at Children's Fest! We have a job to do. Our job is important. Our job is to sing for the boys and girls. We know lots of songs. We're gonna sing O Canada. Then we will sing We Love Windsor and the Itsy-bitsy Spider/La toute petite arraignee. Then we're gonna sing B-I-N-G-O and The Smarties Song and  Frere Jacques and All Around the Circle and Rubber Ducky and He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. We sing our songs in French, too.
Miss Cyn and me and Grandpa James are singing.

Oh! Wait! We're gonna sing The Purple Maple Syrple Song, too! When I was a newborn cubby I couldn't say syrup. Grandpa James says I called it syrple. Now I am five. I can say syrup but I say 'syrple' just for fun.

The boys and girls come up on stage to help us sing. We have lots of fun. We have cymbals and tambourines and a big washtub drum, too!
We sing O Canada. Our Member of Parliament gave us little Canada flags. Thank you, Mr. Comaratin! Cousin Boo holds Chance. He's too newborn to know how to sing but he knows O Canada is an important song 'cuz everyone stands up when we sing it.

Oh.

Be kind to neighbours and friends. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can sing songs! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance get Interviewed by Mike

I can interview Mike. I could be a cub reporter, you know. I would ask good questions.

Guess where me and Chance are! We're at Children's Fest. That's in the Safety Village. The Ottawa 4 bus comes here. The  Safety Village is in Windsor. I know where Windsor is, it's in O Canada.

Mike Thomas is our buddy. He's a reporter. That means he tells people the news. He tells the news on an Internet channel. Today Mike's asking me questions about our Cubcert. That's where Chance and me and Cousin Boo and Cousin Kelly and Grandpa James sing songs for all the boys and girls.

When Mike is done, I hold the microphone and ask him some questions. I ask, "Mike, do you like Smarties?" Mike says, "Why yes, Charles I do." Then I ask him a very serious question. "Mike when you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last?" Mike says, "I always eat the red ones last." Then I say, "Thank you, Mike. That's today's news."

Oh.

We gotta go get our microphones on so we can sing for the boys and girls!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Children's Fest together! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance Drive a Firetruck

Chance and me are driving a fire truck!

Know what? Chance and me are at the Safety Village. There's a fire truck and the nice firefighters gave me a fire hat and everything! I could be a firefighter when I grow up. I could put out fires and rescue people from burning houses. Firefighters have very important jobs, you know. They rescue people and protect everyone in Windsor.
Chance is too newborn to be a firefighter but he could be one when he grows up.

Being a firefighter can be dangerous. Firefighters are very brave, you know. Being brave means not being afraid to help. I'm glad that firefighters at the Windsor Fire Department are our friends.

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the Safety Village for Children's Fest and ride the fire truck together! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance Drive a Jeep

This is our buddy Rick. He's a volunteer. He shows me how to drive the Jeep. Rick knows the rules of the road. Make way good citizens! Here comes Charles and Chance!

Know where me and Chance are? We're at the Safety Village. That's in Windsor. I know where Windsor is. It's in O Canada. Today is Children's Fest. I get to drive a Jeep. I can drive all over the Safety Village. Chance thinks he's helping but he's not. He's too newborn to drive a Jeep. I'm five. I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre on Sandwich Street. Five is pretty old, you know. Five is old enough to drive a Jeep at the Safety Village.

Rick says when I push the gas pedal the Jeep will go! Look at me! I'm driving!

It's fun to drive the Jeep. I can drive to the Windsor Family Credit Union and take some money out of the ATM with my debit card. I can drive to Tim Horton's for a doughnut. Oh! Wait! I think I'll get a butter tart. I l-o-v-e butter tarts. They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide. Driving means I can go lots of place. I could drive and drive and drive all day!
Driving makes me so hungry I could eat three butter tarts!

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the Safety Village and see our buddy Rick. We can drive the Jeep! Okay! Over and out!"

Our buddy Rick tells us the rules of the road. We have to wait for the green light before we turn.

Charles and Chance ride in the Remax Hot Air Balloon

Chance and me are in the Remax hot air balloon with Captain Steve.
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa James. That's in Olde Sandwich Towne. Olde Sandwich Towne is in Windsor. I know where Windsor is. It's in O Canada. I learned all this at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's where I go to school. I'm five, you know.

Grandpa James is really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I have to look after him.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. He climbs way high on things and then he can't get down. I have to say, "My son! Get down from there this instant!" Then I have to help him 'cuz he's afraid. He makes little squawky noises when he's afraid or when he's hungry. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Today we're at Children's Fest. That's in the Safety Village. We get to ride in the Remax hot air balloon. It's a really big balloon. Grandpa James says it's seven storeys high. That's way taller than me! We get to fly way high over the Safety Village. I can see everything! I can see everybody! Know what? I bet that Santa rides in the hot air balloon so he can see who's naughty and nice.
It's fun to be way up high. Now I know why Chance likes to climb way high on everything. I can see better! I can see our house!

Captain Steve went to school to learn how to be a hot air balloon pilot. I could be a hot air balloon pilot when I grow up. Yeah! That would be a good job. I already know how to fly a jet plane. We learned at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Grandpa James says it's part of the Harper Government's pre-school anti-terrorism initiative. Pilots have important jobs, you know.
All systems are 'Go' and we're ready for liftoff! Know what? There aren't any seat belts, so we're gonna sit very still.

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the Safety Village and ride in the Remax hot air balloon with Captain Steve! Okay! Over and out!"

Mi Casita Recommended by Charles and Chance

Chance and me love to eat at Mi Casita.

Guess where me and Chance are? We're at Mi Casita. It's a very nice restaurant on Wyandotte Street. The food is very yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide, you know. All the food is from El Salvador. I know where El Salvador is. It's not in Canada and it's not in France. El Salvador is far away.
Queso flameado.

We get to eat queso flameado and rice and beans and pupusas and we get to drink mango flavoured pop, too.
I can eat all the pupusas. That's 'cuz I'm as hungry as a bear.

When we go to a restaurant we tell the server what we want to eat. Miss Tanya is our server. She tells the chef and the chef makes our food. Servers have very important jobs, you know. I could be a server when I grow up. I could ask people what they would like to eat and drink. I would say, "Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. I'll be your server tonight. What would you like to drink?"

Miss Tanya puts some hot sauce on my beans. I l-o-v-e hot sauce, don't you?

If I eat too fast, Grandpa James says, "My son! Don't eat like a pig!" Grandpa James says silly things sometimes. I'm not a pig. I'm a bear cub. Maybe Grandpa James needs new glasses.

Oh.

Then you can eat pupusas and drink mango pop. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We go to Mi Casita and eat dinner! Okay! Over and out!"

Eating Dinner at the Man Yuen Restaurant

Chance and me love to eat Szechwan food. My favouritest food is General Tao's chicken. I hope I meet him one day and thank him for his chicken. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.

We're at Man Yuen Restaurant. They make Chinese food. It's so yummy! Man Yuen is on Sandwich Street in Olde Sandwich Towne. That's in Windsor. I know where Windsor is. It's in O Canada. We can walk to Man Yuen from our house. I l-o-v-e to eat at Man Yuen. I like everything.

I know how to use chopsticks. Chopsticks are fun. I use them instead of a fork. We learned how to use chopsticks at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Miss Sephorah is our teacher. She knows everything! I will tell you a secret. I think Miss Sephorah might be a princess.

Chance is so newborn he doesn't have any teeth. He just drinks chocolate owls' milk from his bottle.

Miss Flora is our server. Servers have very important jobs. They bring us food to eat. Miss Flora brings us egg foo yong.

We eat and eat and eat. That's 'cuz we're hungry as bears. Grandpa James says, "Slow down, Charles! My dear! Mind your manners, my son! Don't wolf your food down." Grandpa James says silly things sometimes. I'm not a wolf. I'm a bear cub!

Oh.

Pick up trash and garbage. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Man Yuen and say "Hi!" to Flora and Dave, too! Okay! Over and out!"

When we eat at Man Yuen we always say "Hi!" to Dave. I think he's a boss.

Olde Sandwich Towne Festival 2012

Know what? We go to the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. Well, the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival comes to us 'cuz we live here all year but the festival is only in September, right after I start school at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's on Sandwich Street, too.

The festival is extra special this year 'cuz of the Buy some tunnel of the war. I forget. It's a really big name and a long time ago. Grandpa James says it was a war and it started right here on Sandwich Street! Know what? People shouldn't fight. When they do, they should have to sit on the Time Out Chair and think about what they did.

Duke and Dolly are Belgian draft horses. They're brother and sister. Chance and me are brothers. It's nice to have family, eh.

Chance and me had lots of fun. Maggie and Dave get the police to put up signs. There are no cars 'cuz the street is blocked off. We got to drive a team of horses, too! I did the driving. Chance thinks he's helping but he's so newborn he doesn't know how. I am a good driver. I can say, "Giddyup!" and the Duke and Dolly move. They each weigh a tonne. That's a lot of horse! I wish Chance would move when I tell him. He doesn't weigh a whole kilo. Maybe I should holler, "Giddyup!" to Chance. I'll try it.

We helped with the yard sale for the Crosstown Players. We wished everyone "Happy Saint Sandwich Day!" and "Joyeuse Fete de St-Sandwich!"

Chance climbed into the basket! I have to get him out before someone tries to buy him! You can't sell little brothers, you know.
There is a parade. We l-o-v-e parades! There's even a bagpiper band. Grandpa James knows a riddle. Q: What's the difference between an onion and a bagpiper?
A: No one ever cries when you chop up a bagpiper.

I don't understand the riddle. Grandpa James says he'll explain it to me when I'm older. I'm pretty sure I'm old enough, now. I'm five, you know. That's pretty old.

Oh.

Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival together. We can play with Duke and Dolly, too! Okay! Over and out!"

Charles and Chance are on the Six O'clock News

Oh, look! Chance and me are waving at you. We're on the CTV news with our buddy Arms!

Know what? Chance and me are talking to  Arms Bumanlag. He's the boss of the weather at CTV Windsor.

We watch Arms on the six o'clock news every day, you know. Arms has an important job. He can see the weather before we can. I will tell you a secret. I think Arms might be magic. Arms tells us if we gotta wear sunscreen or parkas and mitts before we go outside.
We watch Arms on the news. We watch TV in the living room on our Electrohome. I know why there's glass on the screen. It's so the little people won't fall out of the TV and onto  the living room carpet.

Arms has another job. He's a reporter. I know what a reporter is. A reporter tells all the good citizens about what's happening in Windsor. Windsor is in O Canada, you know. I'm from Windsor. So is Arms. We love Windsor!
Arms asks Miss Janet to tell all the boys and girls and grownups about this year's Children's Fest.

Chance and me and Miss Janet and Mr. Patrick and our clown buddies are gonna be at Children's Fest 2012 this weekend. It's at the Safety Village. Chance and me are gonna sing for the boys and girls. We put on our CubCert. We sing our favouritest songs in French and English. I bet you know them and sing with us, too! We learned most of the songs from Grandpa James and some of them at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's where I go to school, you know. It's on Sandwich Street and Miss Sephorah is my teacher.

Children's Fest is gonna be lots and lots of fun. There's gonna be rides in a hot air balloon. We'll see Clarol the Clown. There will be bands and the Diplomats will be there. I l-o-v-e their band music. There's gonna be pony rides and Polynesian Dancers and Emerald Isle Dancers and the Scottish Society of Society of Windsor Pipe Band. We're gonna have lots of fun! Oh! Wait! There's more! Bouncy Castles and a real firetruck and we're gonna ride in a Jeep! There's gonna be lots of yummy food, too. Yummy is one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.
Arms better watch out 'cuz Chance is gonna try to lick the microphone. Chance is so newborn he thinks everything is yummy but it's not.

Oh.
Hope we see you at Children's Fest! Chance and me will be there. Oh! Wait! Grandpa James is coming, too!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Children's Fest together! Okay! Over and out!"
