One More Day Till My Birthday and Canada's Birthday Too!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Tomorrow is Canada Day. It's my birthday, too! I can hardly wait. Canada is way older than me. Canada will be 143 years old. That's almost as old as James.

On birthdays we get gifts. Chance and me are looking for my presents. I'm pretty sure James hid them somewhere in the house. I don't know what I might get but we're going to find out. When everyone sings Happy Birthday, I'll act surprised, you know.  I'm a very good actor. I bet he hid the presents in the freezer. That's a good place to hid things.

I wonder if I'll get finger paints.  I l-o-v-e to paint. I'm an artist, you know. Maybe I'll get a Canada flag to put on my blue bike. No! Wait! Maybe I'll get a horn for my blue bike so I can make a lot of noise when I ride up and down the sidewalk. Maybe I'll get Snakes and Ladders. That's a fun game. I hope I get Smarties and gummy worms.

We get to wear hats and we have balloons when it's birthday time. We get to eat wallermelon and drink root beer, too. We play games. Birthdays are fun.

James says he's going to bake a sauerkraut and broccoli cake. I know he's just teasing me. Sauerkrauts and broccolis are nasty and I don't like them at all. I hold my nose and eat two bites so I can set a good example for Chance. He's too little to eat food. He just drinks condensed owls' milk out of his bottle but one day he'll have to eat what I eat. I want to send sauerkrauts and broccolis to all those starving children in Belgium.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. If you find your birthday presents before your birthday party remember to act surprised.  Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can look for presents together! Okay! Over and out!"

Countdown to Canada Day

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road in Olde Sandwich Towne. That's in Windsor. Windsor is in O Canada. I learned that at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Miss Jackie is my teacher. I live with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? This is a picture I painted of Chance and me. I named the picture. It's called Rub-a-dub-dub Two Cubs in the Tub. That's Chance and me. We're bear cubs. We're playing in the bathtub. We l-o-v-e to play in the water. We got purple soap that makes bubbles. We love to splash. We play with our fire trucks and our yellow rubber duckies.

Canada Day is coming. That's on July 1st. That's my birthday, too! I love Canada Day and my birthday. We get to eat wallermellon! I l-o-v-e wallermellon. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.

Do you know the song Rubber Ducky ? It's one of my favouritest songs. We sing it. Well, I sing it. Chance doesn't talk, yet. He's too newborn. He's so newborn he only drinks chocolate owls' milk out of his bottle. He doesn't even have a tail! Chance makes little squeaky noises while I sing. That means he's happy.

I know! When you come to our house, you can sing Rubber Ducky with us! Miss Jackie taught the song to us. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. I think she's a Princess. She lives at Mackenzie Hall, you know. It's a castle. You know the words, don't you?

OH!
Rubber Ducky
Your the one
You make bath time
Lots of fun!
Rubber Ducky
I'm awfully fond of you! (bobobodeo)

Rubber Ducky
Joy of joy
When I squeeze you you make noise
Rubber Ducky
You're my very best friend its true.

Every Day
When I make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yella
And chubby
Rubba dub dubby!

Rubber Ducky
Your so fine
And I'm lucky that your mine
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you.

ooh....
Every Day
When I make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yella
And chubby
Rubba dub dubby!

Rubber ducky your so fine
And I'm lucky that your mine
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond
Of you!

Guess what? I climbed up here on top of the fountain in front of Canada Post. I don't know where the water went but it will come back. Chance and me l-o-v-e to play in the fountain. It's really fun, especially on hot, hot days. We can get soaking wet and cool off. Queen Elizabeth is in Canada. She's the boss of almost everybody except the Knighted States. She's our buddy. Maybe she will come to our house and splash in the water with us! We can splash in money, too!

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Stay cool on hot summer days and play in the water.  Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! .We can play in the water and we can eat wallermelon, too! Okay! Over and out!"

I want to eat wallermelon on my birthday. I want gummy worms, too. Gummy worms are full of Vitamin C, you know. I want a lot of gummy worms. I won't eat them all, I will share some with my friends and buddies. I would use my very best manners. I would say, "Would you care for a gummy worm? What flavour would you like?"

Oh.

Good citizens can come to my birthday. We can eat gummy worms and wallermelon. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and bring your jammies and your toothbrush, too. We can sleep in the tent in the backyard and tell scary ghost stories but first, we can drink root beer watch the fireworks together! Okay! Over and out!"

The Slidey-Slide

Know what? Chance and me are having lots of fun.  We're on the slidey-slide. It's very bouncy. We slide down it real fast. It tickles my tummy to ride so fast. I holler real loud when I'm the slidey-slide. Chance doesn't really talk but he makes little squeaky noises when he's happy. I let him ride on my shoulders. Chance squeaks all the way down the slide. I watch him to make sure he doesn't hurt himself. When we get to the bottom, we climb to the top and slide down again.

All the sliding on the slidey-slide makes us hungry. Know what? James gave us each a toonie so we could get something to eat. I know what I want to eat. I want to eat a candy apple. I l-o-v-e candy apples. They're yummy, sticky and sweet. That's three of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

The other food group is Nasty. Like brocollis and sauerkrauts. Those are nasty and I don't like to eat them. Know what else tastes nasty? Buckley's Cough Syrup . It's awful!

The candy apples cost $2. That's how much money a toonie is. It takes two loonies to make a toonie. I learned that from Miss Jackie at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Dentre. Know what else? Toonies have Queen Elizabeth on the front and a picture of bear on the back. I wonder if he's related to Chance and me. He could be be our polar cousin! James holds out a toonie and says, "See the Queen? Then he turns over the toonie and says, "Now you can see Her Majesty's bear behind!" That's a pun. I know what a pun is.

Queen Elizabeth is  our buddy and she's the boss of almost everybody except the Knighted States. When we go to Buckingham Palace we can climb trees in the back yard with Her Majesty and share a box of Smarties with her, too. I would say, "Would Your Majesty care for a Smartie? Hold your hand out and say, 'please.' Oh, Your Majesty, don't forget to eat the red ones last, my dear." I know how to make tattoos with Smarties. I would help Her Majesty how to make tattoos on her face with Smarties. That's fun!

Oh.

Be polite to everyone, especially Her Majesty. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer with us. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and we can slide on the slidey-slide and eat candy apples! We can go over to Queen Elizabeth's house and climb trees with Her Majesty!  Okay! Over and out!"

Thinking

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh! Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? I'm thinking. I'm thinking about things I want to do on my birthday. It's only five days until my birthday. It's on Canada Day. July 1st. I'm thinking and I'm writing everything down on this piece of paper so I don't forget.

I am pretty sure I want to eat wallermelon on my birthday. I l-o-v-e wallermelon. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. James says they're full of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. When I looked, I didn't see any vitamins in there at all! Maybe they're invisible. James says that wallermon came from Africa and it's related to cucumbers and squash. I know what related means. I'm related to James and Chance. Related means we're a family. I don't think I'd want a squash or a cucumber as my little brother 'cuz then I couldn't eat them. We're not supposed to eat our friends, buddies or relatives, you know.

I want to play games on my birthday, too. I want to play "I'm Gonna Get You!" That's a fun game. I chase Chance all over and holler, "I'm gonna get you!" Chance runs as fast as he can. I'm way faster than Chance. I catch him and tickle him. He makes little squeaky noises when he's happy.

Oh.

Do good deeds. Good citizens get to eat wallermelon. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house for my birthday. You can eat wallermelon and play with us! Okay! Over and out!"

Bonne Fete National and Getting Ready for Canada Day

Know what? Today is a holiday for all our friends and buddies in Quebec. Today is Saint-Jean-Baptiste! It's a really fun day. We get be in a parade and put blue and white balloons on my blue bike. We get to eat blue cake with blue icing. Blue is one of my favouritest colours.  We get to make siren noises and holler, "Vive le Quebec!"

I know who Saint Jean was. He was a nice man in the Bible. He was Jesus' cousin. Saint John helped people to be good but he lost his head. That's the sad part of the story.

Know what's after Saint-Jean-Baptiste? We'll get ready for Canada Day. That's next week. That's Canada's birthday. Know what else? That's my birthday, too! I l-o-v-e birthdays. We get to eat wallermelon! I l-o-v-e wallermelon. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. Wallermelon is special, you know. We get to see fireworks, too! I think we should be able to eat fireworks 'cuz they're so pretty. James says they're hot and can burn us.

Chance and me are trying on our Canada Day handkerchiefs. Go Canada! Go Canada! I don't know exactly where Canada is going but we're gonna go, too!

Oh.

March in the parade. You can eat Smarties and drink root beer with us. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! Bonne Fete de St-Jean! Okay! Salut! A toi! That's French for Over and out!"

Summertime

Summer's here! I know a song about Summertime. Miss Jackie taught it to us at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's my school, you know. Here's the song. Chance likes the song a lot. I sing it to him at nap time. Ready?

Summertime

Summertime and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is HIGH
Oh your Daddy's rich and your ma is good lookin'
So hush little baby, don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're goin' to rise up singing
YES, you'll spread your wings
And you'll take the sky
But till that morning
There's a nothin' can harm you
With daddy and mammy standin' by.

When I sing this song, Chance falls asleep in my arms. He makes little snory noises when he's asleep. He's adorable when he sleeps but I'm sure he's dreaming about climbing high on things. He's a handful!  Know what? I'm lucky to have a little brother, even if he can't talk and rips off his diaper and climbs way high on things and can't get down. I wouldn't trade Chance for all the gummy worms in the world.

Oh.

Sing happy songs. When you sing songs you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can sing songs and eat Smarties together! Okay! Over and out!"

Summer is Here!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I help him remember. I reminded him that Summer came today.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Summer is here! Summer came at 7.25 this morning. I got up real early so I could see Summer come! I'm so glad Summer is here. We get to do lots of fun things now that Summer is here. Know what? Chance was born in October so he missed Summer last year.

Okay. Know what I'm doing? I'm making a list. This is an important list. This is a list of things Chance and James and me want to do this Summer. Ready?

1. Hunt lions in the back yard with our space ray guns.
2. Pick fruit off the trees and eat it.
3. Lay on the grass and watch the clouds go by.
4. Ride on the MV Jiimaan  to Pelee Island .

5. Swim in Lake Erie and have lots of picnics, too!
6. Climb trees with our buddy, Queen Elizabeth.
7.Go on VIA Rail to visit our friends and buddies in Quebec.
8. Cook yummy food on the barbecue.
9. Eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Wallermellon!
10. Ride our bikes up and down Sandwich Street. Oh, and make really loud siren noises, too!

I'm sure there's lots of  other stuff we want to do with Summer but I'm tired of thinking. I want to go play. We're gonna go pick cherries! I l-o-v-e cherries. They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

Oh.

Have lots of fun with Summer! Eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can have fun with Summer together! Okay! Over and out!"

Father's Day

Know what? Today is Father's Day. Today we get to do nice things for our fathers. Chance and me don't have a father. Well, not a father bear. We have James. See, fathers aren't just relatives.  Real fathers love us, no matter what. James loves us with all his heart. That makes James our father, even if he doesn't look anything like us.

I know what fathers do. Fathers hold us tight us in the middle of the night when we wake up from bad dreams. Fathers sit with us when we're sick with Austrian measles. Fathers put us in the Time Out Chair when we do something we shouldn't. Fathers laugh with us while we sit in the big 'ole sugar maple out in the back yard and share a box of Smarties. Fathers help us make forts in the living room on rainy days. Fathers give us our baths and read our nighty-night story to us and hear our bedtime prayers before tucking us into bed.  Best of all, fathers hug us when we come running and they tickle our ears and kiss our noses and tell us we're handsome bear cubs.

Chance and me have a surprise for James. We worked on it all morning. We hid under the bed so he wouldn't see us make the surprise. We made a Father's Day card for James. It's a special card. It's a  heart made out of peanut butter. It says, "We love u James". I spelled out all the words with Smarties. Red ones. We saved all the red Smarties for a long time, you know. We're supposed to eat the red ones last. That's what the Smarties song says. We saved all of our red Smarties for this card. James always says, "Save the best for last!" Now he will know how much we love him. We love him  so much we gave him all our red Smarties!

Oh.

Be nice to your father, no matter what shape or size or colour he is. Share Smarties and root beer with your father. Don't forget to tell him you love him.   Okay! Happy Father's Day!  Over and out!"

It's Raining, It's Pouring

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. He's so old he says he remembers the first time it ever rained!

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. Now, he's my little brother. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? It's raining. James says it's raining cats and dogs but he's being silly. I'm five. I know that cats and dogs don't fall out of the sky. Just water. Kyle and Chance and me are watching the Weather Network to find out when the rain will stop and we can go outside and dig holes in the back yard.

I know a song about rain.

It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and he bumped his head,
And he couldn't get up in the morning.
Rain, rain,
Go away!
Come again some other day!
THE END.

I know what we can do! We can get some pots and pans and spoons from the kitchen. We can make a rock band. We can sing songs until the rain stops! Yeah. That's a fun thing to do! I know lots of songs. Miss Jackie teaches us songs. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. Chance doesn't really sing but he makes little squeaky noises when he's happy.

Oh.

Find fun things to do indoors when it's rainy outside. It's a good time to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to Kyle's house and play with us! You can be in our rock band! Okay! Over and out!"

Laundromat Fun

Know what? We're at the Laundromat. Chance and me are having fun. We're playing Hide and Seek. Our buddies Peter, Jay and James are hiding their eyes. They're counting to 100 like this--one elephant, two elephants, three elephants--all the way too 100 elephants. While they're counting, we hide. Chance isn't a good hider, so I help him. We're hiding in here, inside the dryer.

If I had a quarter to put in the slot we could ride around inside like astronauts. I could be Marc Garneau , you know. He is an astronaut. He was the first Canadian to go to outer space.  I could say, "Roger that, Houston." Astronauts get to go to outer space. I know where outer space is. It's in our back yard and way up high--higher than the sugar maple.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta get back to Earth and find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. You can be astronauts like Chance and me. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer in outer space. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can be astronauts together! Okay! Roger that! Over and out!"

Handsome Bear Cub Models

Know what? We're handsome bear cubs. We're pretending to be models in commercials and advertisements. It's a good game to play.

This is me. I'm in this advertisement for a phone card. I don't have a phone card. That's 'cuz I don't have a cell phone.

Look at Chance! He is pretending to be in a gyro. That's a sandwich. I don't think he would taste very good, even if he were covered with garlic sauce. I would chase him all over the house and holler, "Come here, Chance! I'm gonna eat you all up!" Chance would run as fast as he could and make little squeaky noises 'cuz he's happy.

Oh.

Play and have fun. Pretend you're a model. Handsome models get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can be models together! Okay! Over and out!"

All About Hide and Seek

Know what? We're playing Hide & Seek with our buddy Peter. It's the funnest game ever. I hide my eyes and count to 100 like this--one elephant, two elephants, three elephants...all the way to 100. That's a lot of counting. Miss Jackie taught me to count. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. I love Miss Jackie.  Chance is supposed to hide while I count. Then I go look for him. Chance isn't very good at hiding. He thinks when he closes his eyes he's invisible! That's silly. I can see him. He just has his eyes shut!

Chance hid in this box. Know how I found him? He fell asleep. He was making little snory noises. Chance does that when he's sleeping. He was real easy to find. I just listened. When I heard the little snory noise I followed it. I woke Chance up when I hollered, "Boo! Boo! Boo on you!" Now we have to find Peter. We have to find Kyle, too. Kyle is a cat. He lives with Peter. Kyle is a really good hider.

Oh.

Listen carefully and your ears will tell you lots of things. Good citizens get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to Peter's house and play with us! We can play Hide and Seek together! Okay! Over and out!"

Playing with Kyle

Know what? Chance and me are playing with Kyle. He's a cat. He lives with his buddy Peter in Lasalle. I know where Lasalle is. It's next to Windsor and Windsor is the centre of the known universe and the nicest part of Detroit.

We have lots of fun with Kyle. He loves to climb way up high on things. It's fun to climb up high. Everything looks different from way up high.

Kyle is smart. He knows how to get down when he climbs up high. Most of the time Chance doesn't know how to get down so I have to help him. It's a good thing I know how to help Chance when he's in trouble. That's what makes us good citizens. Good citizens know how to help.

Oh.

Climb as high as you can but be sure you know how to get down. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to Peter and Kyle's house and play with us! We can climb up high together! Okay! Over and out!"

Playing the Piano

Know what? I'm playing the piano. I know songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and My Hat it Had Three Corners. I like to play the piano. I practise playing the scales. I could be a concert pianists, you know. Chance turns the pages for me. He's my helper. Sometimes he forgets to help and tries to eat the sheet music! We're not supposed to eat paper. It's not in the Canada Food Guide.

Sometimes Chance plays with me. We play Chopsticks and Heart and Soul. James says when two play the piano at the same time it's called a duet. Chance isn't very good yet, but he's just a wee little cubby and he'll get better, I know. Chance loves to play the piano. He makes little squeaky noises. That means he's happy.

Oh.

Learn to play the piano. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play the piano with us! We can make music together! Okay! Over and out!"

I Love Pizza!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy,  Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. Grandpa James says he remembers the invention of pizza. He must be really old--at least 20!

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. He's so newborn he doesn't even have any teeth, yet.  I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are at Maestro Pizza. We came here with our buddies Grandpa James, Uncle Jay and Uncle Peter. I know what pizza is. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. We're hungry as bears. That's why we're here. Danny, Sivan and Mike make pizza. They make really good pizzas.

We ordered three pizzas. We got a Maestro pizza with steak and feta cheese. We got a Supreme pizza, too. The bestest pizza of all is the Nut Lover Delight. It has almonds and macadamia nuts and pine nuts on top. We share our pizza 'cuz that's what good citizens do, you know.

I could be a pizza maker when I grow up.  It's an important job. I know how to make pizza. Mike showed me. First you make a big and flat circle out of the dough. Then you pour tomato sauce on it. Then you put all the other things on it--except the kitchen sink. I don't know what that means but I don't want to eat a kitchen sink, do you? Pizza goes in a big oven.  Ovens are hot. Don't touch a hot oven. It will burn. It's okay of the pizza gets hot. That's why it's in the oven.

It takes 20 minutes to bake a pizza. That's a long time. It's way longer than I ever sat in the Time Out Chair.  I was really glad when the pizza was ready. My stomach was growling. I was eating really fast 'cuz I was hungry. Grandpa James said, "Now Charles, don't wolf your food down. Eat slowly and chew your food. Don't eat like a pig. He says really silly things sometimes. I'm not a wolf. I'm not a pig. Maybe Grandpa James needs new glasses. Almost any one can see that I'm a bear cub and a handsome one, too.

Oh.

Don't wolf down your food or eat like a pig. Then you can share pizza with us. We can eat Smarties and drink root beer, too.  I know! You can come over to our house and eat pizza with us. Okay! Over and out!"
