Hangin' Out at Petwise

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are visiting Petwise. It's a special store for our friends like bunny rabbits and kitty cats and puppy dogs, too. This is our buddy Shaun. He helps people who come to the store. Lots of our friends don't eat Smarties or drink root beer. they have special food and it comes from Petwise. They're on Facebook, you know.

We met some new friends at Petwise. This is Carrie. She's a dog. She's very friendly. She took Chance for a piggy back ride--even though Carrie's not a pig. We just say piggyback. Chance doesn't talk, 'cuz he's a newborn cubby. Chance makes lots of little squeaky noises when he's happy. He squeaked a lot when Carrie took him for a ride. I didn't go for a ride 'cuz I'm way too big. I'm five, you know. I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. That's on Sandwich Street. I have lots of friends and buddies there.

See, our friends have four feet and our buddies have two feet. Snakes don't have any feet at all. Know what? Snakes don't have to wear shoes. Chance and me don't have to wear shoes, either. After our bath, we get to run around bare naked. That's a pun, you know.

We're playing Hide-and-Seek with Onyx the cat. Chance is supposed to be hiding. He climbs way up high on things. See him? He's at the tippy-top of the Cat Hotel.

When Chance closes his eyes, he thinks he's invisible but he's not. Onyx the cat and I know where to find him. We just look and there he is! Oh, oh! Chance is stuck. He can't get down. I say, "My son! Come down from there before you fall!" Bless his little cotton sox, he can't get down. I have to help him. Chance is a handful, you know.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to your friends and buddies. Be polite to your neighbours.  Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can all hang out at Petwise! Okay! Over and out!"

Recycling is Fun!

Newborn cubbies don't talk. They just make squeaky noises when they're happy and little squawky noises when they're hungry or have to poo. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know where we are today? We're at Windsor's recycling centre with our buddy Peter. I know what recycling is. It's when we put empty root beer cans in the red box and old  papers in the blue box. When they're full we take them to the recycling centre.  Peter has things to recycle and we get to help. Helping is fun. Good citizens help each other, you know.

At the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre, Miss Jackie teaches us about recycling. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, she always says. Miss Jackie is very smart. She's pretty. I think she might be a princess.

We take our own cloth bags to Westside Foods when we go shopping so we don't use plastic bags. Know what? Chance likes to ride in the bag. That's 'cuz he's so little. He's a newborn cubby. He doesn't have any teeth, yet. He doesn't even have a tail!

Good citizens recycle. Recycling is a good thing to do. It's good for Mother Earth, James says. Know what? They have big boxes for everything at the recycling centre.

This is our buddy, Ed. He's lucky. Ed works at the recycling centre. He tells people where to put things. Ed has an important job, you know. I could be a recycle bear when I grow up. I would get to wear an orange shirt. I would say, "Good citizen, place your cardboard in the Number Two bin, please."

I would thank everybody who came to the centre with their stuff. If they were very, very good I might give them root beer and Smarties, too. Good citizens do good deeds and they get to drink root beer and eat Smarties.

Oh.

Pick up trash and garbage. Put them in the blue boxes and the red boxes. Then you can go to the recycling centre.  You can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can fill up the blue box together! Okay! Over and out!"

Surprise Visitors

He doesn't have a tail, yet. He doesn't even have any teeth. Chance just drinks owls' milk out of his bottle.  He makes little squeaky noises when he's happy and little squawky noises when he's hungry or has to poo.  I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? We got surprise visitors. I love surprises!  Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Terry came to our house! They live in British Columbia. That's pretty far from our house. I know where British Columbia is. It's in O Canada. I can show you on the map. It's the first province on the left. We had fun with Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Terry. They kissed our noses and tickled our ears. We went out to eat. Chance got apple juice. I got chocolate milk and a bendy straw. We played games and we shared a box of Smarties, too.

When Grandpa Terry and Grandma Bonnie left our house, they got on a plane to fly to Newfoundland and Labrador. That's in O Canada, too. I know where Newfoundland and Labrador is. It's the first province on the right. Miss Jackie taught us all about  in jogfree class at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre.

Oh.

Be kind to friends and neighbours. Good citizens get to eat Smarties and drink chocolate milk with a bendy straw. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can have fun together! Okay! Over and out!"

Olde Sandwich Towne Festival

Know what? This weekend is the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. It's lots of fun. We talked to the fire fighters and got to ride in the big red fire truck. There's good food and good music and a bouncy castle and yard sales and BMX bike stunts and music and contests for the best sandwich and the best chilli and there's root beer and Smarties and chocolate cake. I l-o-v-e chocolate cake. It's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

James even got interviewed by the CBC.

Chance and me are riding a BMX mountain bike. One of the guys let us ride on it. That was nice of him.  It's really fast. Did you know the wheels cost $600 each? That would buy a lot of Smarties, you know. I'm wearing a helmet 'cuz I want to keep my head safe. James says it's a 'brain bucket.' He often says silly things like that. Chance took his helmet off, already. He took off his diaper and his running shoes, too. He doesn't know any better, he's just a wee little cubby. He really is a handful!

Riding a fast bike is really fun. Look what we can do! The guys are really talented. They can jump up in the air on their bikes. It's fun to watch them. They do all kinds of tricks and they never get hurt. I can't wait to go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre and learn how to ride my bike just like the guys do.

Nicole took the pictures. She's one of our bestest buddies. She's pretty good with a camera, you know. You can see more of her work at www.ncsphotography.com.
Oh.

Come to the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can ride bikes together!  Okay! Over and out!"

The Slidey-Slide

Know what? Chance and me are having lots of fun.  We're on the slidey-slide. It's very bouncy. We slide down it real fast. It tickles my tummy to ride so fast. I holler real loud when I'm the slidey-slide. Chance doesn't really talk but he makes little squeaky noises when he's happy. I let him ride on my shoulders. Chance squeaks all the way down the slide. I watch him to make sure he doesn't hurt himself. When we get to the bottom, we climb to the top and slide down again.

All the sliding on the slidey-slide makes us hungry. Know what? James gave us each a toonie so we could get something to eat. I know what I want to eat. I want to eat a candy apple. I l-o-v-e candy apples. They're yummy, sticky and sweet. That's three of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

The other food group is Nasty. Like brocollis and sauerkrauts. Those are nasty and I don't like to eat them. Know what else tastes nasty? Buckley's Cough Syrup . It's awful!

The candy apples cost $2. That's how much money a toonie is. It takes two loonies to make a toonie. I learned that from Miss Jackie at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Dentre. Know what else? Toonies have Queen Elizabeth on the front and a picture of bear on the back. I wonder if he's related to Chance and me. He could be be our polar cousin! James holds out a toonie and says, "See the Queen? Then he turns over the toonie and says, "Now you can see Her Majesty's bear behind!" That's a pun. I know what a pun is.

Queen Elizabeth is  our buddy and she's the boss of almost everybody except the Knighted States. When we go to Buckingham Palace we can climb trees in the back yard with Her Majesty and share a box of Smarties with her, too. I would say, "Would Your Majesty care for a Smartie? Hold your hand out and say, 'please.' Oh, Your Majesty, don't forget to eat the red ones last, my dear." I know how to make tattoos with Smarties. I would help Her Majesty how to make tattoos on her face with Smarties. That's fun!

Oh.

Be polite to everyone, especially Her Majesty. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer with us. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and we can slide on the slidey-slide and eat candy apples! We can go over to Queen Elizabeth's house and climb trees with Her Majesty!  Okay! Over and out!"

Things I know About Art

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. He says he's older than dirt. That must be really old, like 20!

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? I'm hangin' around. I'm thinking about art. Chance and me are artists. We paint pictures of ourselves and sell them. Then we take the money to Mac's Milk and we buy gummy worms and Smarties. Sometimes we get root beer. I l-o-v-e gummy worms and Smarties and root beer! They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

When we were in Toronto, Chance and James and me visited the Art Gallery of Ontario They got art everywhere! Art is to look at. I could be an artist, you know. I go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre in Windsor. Miss Jackie teaches us about art and famous artists like Vincent Van Goo and Laura Secord and Sidney Crosby.

Artists paint with different things like oil paint or acrylics. Miss Jackie says they're called mediums. I have a favourite medium. I like to paint with peanut butter. It's the bestest medium of all. If I get as  hungry as a bear, I can eat some while I paint.  James says I can only paint on paper or canvas. One time I painted a peanut butter picture on the kitchen wall. It was a nice picture of our family. That's James and Chance and me. James said we don't paint pictures on the walls.  I had to sit on the Time Out Chair and think about painting on paper instead of the wall.

Oh.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Enjoy art. Art is everywhere. Become an artist. Artists are good citizens. Artists get to eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and paint with us! We can be the Group of Seven! Okay! Over and out!"

Pufferbelly

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. He says he's older than VIA Rail! That must be really old. I'm sure James must be at least 20!

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? We're at Kiddie World. That's a fun place to go. They have lots and lots of rides for kids and bear cubs, too. I'm the engineer on this puffer belly. That's another word for train. I say, "All aboard!" Everyone sits down and I drive the train around on the track. Chance is the conductor. He's supposed to help but he's really little and forgets. He just takes off his diaper and climbs all over on everything. I have to keep an eye on him so he doesn't fall and hurt himself.

I know a song about the train. Miss Jackie taught it to us at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre.

Down By the Station
Down by the station early in the morning,
See the little puffer bellies all in a row.
See the engine driver pull the little throttle:
Puff, Puff, Toot! Toot! Off we go!

Oh.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens and don't pollute the earth. Walk, ride your bike and take VIA Rail. Good citizens get to Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Good citizens get to ride on puffer bellies. Come over to our house and play with us! We can ride the train together! Okay! Puff! Puff! Toot! Toot! All aboard! Over and out!"
