I Want to be a Fire Fighter!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are way up here inside a big red fire truck. It belongs to the City of Windsor. I'm pretending to drive. Chance is my lookout. He makes little squeaky noises when he sees things in front of us on the road. The siren is really loud and the red lights flash, too. Everybody gets out of the way when a fire truck passes by!

Fire fighters have very important jobs. I know what they do. They go to fires and put them out with big hoses filled with water. The job can be dangerous, you know. Fire fighters are very brave.

I'm five. I'm big enough to wear a fire helmet. The nice fireman let me try it on. A helmet keeps my head safe. Chance is such a wee little thing he fits right inside his helmet. Newborn cubbies aren't big enough to be fire fighters. I think you have to be at least five.

I know! I'll ask Miss Jackie. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. She knows everything. I think she is a princess.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Obey the rules. Don't start any fires. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can visit the fire truck together!  Okay! Over and out!"

Olde Sandwich Towne Festival

Know what? This weekend is the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival. It's lots of fun. We talked to the fire fighters and got to ride in the big red fire truck. There's good food and good music and a bouncy castle and yard sales and BMX bike stunts and music and contests for the best sandwich and the best chilli and there's root beer and Smarties and chocolate cake. I l-o-v-e chocolate cake. It's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

James even got interviewed by the CBC.

Chance and me are riding a BMX mountain bike. One of the guys let us ride on it. That was nice of him.  It's really fast. Did you know the wheels cost $600 each? That would buy a lot of Smarties, you know. I'm wearing a helmet 'cuz I want to keep my head safe. James says it's a 'brain bucket.' He often says silly things like that. Chance took his helmet off, already. He took off his diaper and his running shoes, too. He doesn't know any better, he's just a wee little cubby. He really is a handful!

Riding a fast bike is really fun. Look what we can do! The guys are really talented. They can jump up in the air on their bikes. It's fun to watch them. They do all kinds of tricks and they never get hurt. I can't wait to go to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre and learn how to ride my bike just like the guys do.

Nicole took the pictures. She's one of our bestest buddies. She's pretty good with a camera, you know. You can see more of her work at www.ncsphotography.com.

My Blue Bike

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's forgetful and really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I have to help him remember where he puts things. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are looking at my blue bike. It has a Canada flag on it. Today we get to bring it outside 'cuz spring is here! I can ride real fast on my bike. Elmer the Safety Elephant says we should wear helmets for protection. He's my friend. I wear a helmet so I don't hurt my head if I fall. Chance is too little ride a bike, so he rides with me. We have to get a helmet at Canadian Tire for a newborn cubby, you know. Chance might fall off and hurt himself. I l-o-v-e my blue bike. James has a green bike with a Canada flag on it. We ride up and down Sandwich Street and make siren noises. We ride over to Mac's Milk and get gummy worms and Smarties. That's fun!

Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Who wants to go for a bicycle ride? Where's my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario?" That's me! That's Chance, too! Okay. We gotta go now. We're gonna go outside and ride up and down Sandwich Street. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Ride your bikes! Over and out!"

Boxing Day

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He forgets where he put his teeth! He's really old. I have all my teeth, you know. James was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark!  I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing.

These are some pix of us with our buddies Doreen and Rob and Debbie. We had Christmas dinner with them.  I'm staying far away from that bowl full of brocollis. Can you see them? Brocollis taste yucky. They smell yucky, too. Yucky is one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide, you know.

Know what? Yesterday was Boxing Day. That's the day we give a present to someone we forgot. This year I'm giving everyone big bear hugs. I like them. Hugs are nice. We should be able to eat hugs. They'd be sweet and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. There are brocollis in the fridge. They're nasty. I hate them. I sure hope we don't have to eat them. I ate one on Christmas Day. I had to hold my nose and swallow real fast. I was very brave.

I'm gonna go play with Chance. We got fire trucks and helmets as presents. This me, Charles, saying "over and out! Oh! Wait! Know what? There are only 364 days until Christmas!
