Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.
Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!
Know what? Chance and me are way up here inside a big red fire truck. It belongs to the City of Windsor. I'm pretending to drive. Chance is my lookout. He makes little squeaky noises when he sees things in front of us on the road. The siren is really loud and the red lights flash, too. Everybody gets out of the way when a fire truck passes by!
Fire fighters have very important jobs. I know what they do. They go to fires and put them out with big hoses filled with water. The job can be dangerous, you know. Fire fighters are very brave.
I'm five. I'm big enough to wear a fire helmet. The nice fireman let me try it on. A helmet keeps my head safe. Chance is such a wee little thing he fits right inside his helmet. Newborn cubbies aren't big enough to be fire fighters. I think you have to be at least five.
I know! I'll ask Miss Jackie. She's my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. She knows everything. I think she is a princess.
Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.
This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Obey the rules. Don't start any fires. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can visit the fire truck together! Okay! Over and out!"
Charles and his buddy James explore Olde Sandwich Towne, a heritage neighbourhood in Windsor, Ontario. Charles offers a unique, playful and funny perspective on daily life, Windsor and the folks in the neighbourhood. Follow the adventures of five-year old Charles the Bear Cub and his newborn baby brother Chance. A James Mays blog.

Things To Do at Hotel-Dieu

Know what? We're at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. We're waiting for James. He's seeing a doctor. I think James might be sick. That's what doctors do. They see sick people and make them well.
We're supposed to sit quietly and wait until James and the doctor are done. We sit up. We sit back. We sit around. We sit still. I don't like to sit. Chance doesn't like to sit, either. This is like being on the Time Out Chair, except we didn't do anything bad.
Oh, look! A wheelchair! Chance and me can sit in the wheelchair. I can make it roll. We can roll up and down the hallway. I can make it roll really fast and we can make siren noises! That's fun. Chance doesn't make siren noises. He just makes little squeaky noises when he's happy. He's making lots of squeaky noises, now. Wheeeee! This is fun! Look at us! Look out good citizens! Wheelchair coming through!
Oh, my! A nurse just told us not to race in the hallway. She said it's not nice to race. Okay. We won't race. We're not racists, you know.
Oh.
Step aside for wheelchairs. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital and play with us! We can ride up and down the hallway in the wheelchair together! Okay! Over and out!"

Laying Around
Labels:
Canada Day,
fire truck,

siren
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He is old and forgetful. He's so old he remembers the first sunrise. Wow! He must be 20. That's really old, you know. I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing.
We sure do have fun. Sometimes I lay real quiet and Chance climbs on my back. Then I crawl around and pretend I'm a big 'ole fire truck. I make siren noises. Chance makes squeaky noises. That means he's happy. Sometimes we just lay in front of the fire and I tell Chance stories about the olden days when I was just a wee little cubby. Sometimes James brings out the picture album and tells us both stories. I like to hear about the olden days, don't you? I'm going to be six on Canada Day. Then I'll be really old!
Oh! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where's my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor and my Princes of Ontario?" That's us! Charles and Chance! We're gonna run find James so he can kiss our noses and tickle our ears and make us laugh right out loud. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Tell good stories about the olden days! Over and out!"

Hi. I'm Charles. I'm a handsome bear cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy James.
Know what? I know what fire hydrants are for. They are for my dog friends, so they can go to the washroom. My friend Tanner told me that. He's a big 'ole yeller dog who lives with Cassidy the bunny rabbit.
Know what else? Sometimes there is a fire and the fire fighters hook their hoses up to the fire hydrant and spray everything with water. That is a fun way to take a bath. I wanna ride on a fire truck. I want to make the lights flash and make the siren sound really loud. I could be a fire righter, you know.
Oh! Wait! I can ride up and down the sidewalk on my blue bike with the Canada flag on it. I can make the siren sound. Okay! I gotta go play fire truck! This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Have fun when you play! Bye for now!"
