April Fools on Us!

This is me. I love surprises, you know. I like parties, too!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with Grandpa James.  That's right next to Sandwich Street. Grandpa James is really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I help him remember. This morning he forgot to put on shoes before we went outside!

Oh. Wait!  Frankie lives with us, too. He's four. Frankie Facebooks with Her Majesty. Frankie is a very good speller and he can make his ears wiggle. That makes us laugh and laugh and laugh.

Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful! Oh. Wait! Chance has an identical twin brother. His name is Second Chance!

Our pharmacy is at 3211 Sandwich Street. That's in Windsor.  Windsor is on O Canada, you know.

Know what? We go to the drugstore on Sandwich Street.  That is another word for a pharmacy. Our drugstore is an important place. It  iswhere we get our meds when we're sick. One time we got Austrian measles. We had big green spots all over us for eleven days. We got a prescription for medicinal Smarties and Canada Dry with bendy straws at the drugstore and we got well.

Smarties are full of chocolate-y goodness and that makes bear cubs healthy and happy.

Miss Donna and Miss Hiam and Miss Ivana had a beautiful gift basket to give away. I wrote down our names on a paper and Miss Hiam put it in the box. Then on April Fool's Day, Miss Donna said,  "Charles, you won the basket!" Were we ever surprised!

Miss Donna is holding me, Grandpa James is holding our prize. Miss Haim has  Chance in her hands and Miss Ivana is holding Second Chance.  I will tell you a secret. I think the ladies are princesses.

There are lots of fun things in the basket.  Everything is Atoma. It's the name. We have hand sanitizer. Bear cubs don't have hands. We have paws. Know what? Hand sanitizer  works on paws! We got floss. I love floss!  Floss is for my teeth but it's fun to play with, too. We get newborn baby Kleenexes and goat soap. The soap smells nice. Chance and Second Chance already tried to eat it. You can't eat soap. It's not one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide. We can bath with Epsom salt and a scrubby. We got lots and lots of other things that help us keep clean andI take care of ourselves.

Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Frankie, too! and  Chance and Second Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Pick up trash and garbage. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can  all take a bath together and  splash in the tub! Okay! Over and out!"

Merry Christmas is Here! Merry Christmas!

Christmas dinner is special at our house. All the foods are yummy and sweet and sticky. We don't have to eat nasty foods like broccolis and sauerkrauts on Christmas.
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Oh. Wait! Frankie lives with us, too! Frankie's four. He goes to the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre with me. That's on Sandwich Street. Sandwich Street is in Windsor. Windsor is in O Canada, you know.

Merry Christmas came when we were asleep last night. She brought Santa and the elves and Elvis and the Newborn Baby Jesus and the Little Drummer Boy and the Three Wise Guys who followed the OnStar to our house!

Know what? Merry Christmas brought us gifts! We open our presents after breakfast.

Christmas breakfast is special. We get to eat in our Christmas jammies. We get to eat special pancakes. The pancakes look like this. We put peanut butter and maple syrup on our pancakes, too. When I was a wee little cub I couldn't say 'syrup'. I used to say 'syrple'. I still say 'syrple' for fun sometimes and we all laugh out loud.

When we're finished eating we say, "May we be excused?" We help clean off the table. We rinse our dishes and stack them in the dishwasher.

Our presents.
Now, we get to open our presents! They're under the Christmas tree. Grandpa James says our Christmas tree is a rota Picea canadensis.  That's Latin for Canadian Tire Spruce.

We got lots of presents. Frankie and me got space ray guns! Now we can play Lion Hunt in the back yard next summer!
We got Smarties and candy canes and chicken bones from Ganong Brothers' and books. I got one of my favouritest books, Jelly Belly. I can read, you know. I make Frankie and Chance laugh when I read to them.

We have special food for Christmas, you know.
Unwrapping all those presents make me hungry. I'm as hungry as a bear! We have special food for Christmas lunch. We eat tourtiere . Tourtiere is yummy and that's one of the Four Food Groups in Canada's Food Guide. We get to eat guacamole and chips, too. Know what we got for dessert? I'll tell you. We got cheesecake with bakeapple topping. I love cheesecake. I love bakeapples, too. Bakeapples come from Newfoundland and Labrador. Some people call them cloudberries. Everything is yummy and we're stuffed!

Did you hear that? Grandpa James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find Grandpa James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

Grandpa James is hollering, "Where's Frankie? Where's my Knight of Knewfoundland and my Lord of Labrador? That's Frankie! He's our Knight of Knewfoundland and our Lord of Labrador!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat tourtiere and cheesecake and bakeapples with us. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can share Christmas together! Okay! Over and out!"

Summer Barbecue Fun

He's our cousin. Frankie is four.

We're having a birthday barbecue at Auntie Deb and Uncle Rob's house. We love to barbecue. Barbecue is yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide, you know.

Uncle Shawn and Auntie Michelle are here, too. They have a new baby. His name is Junior. I know what Junior means. It's means a little one. Like Smarties Junior. They're Smarties in a little box.

Star is here. She's our friend. Star is a dog. We like to play with Star.

I gotta find Frankie. Grandpa James says, "Where's my handsome Frankie? Where's my Knight of Knewfoundland and my Lord of Labrador?" That's Frankie! He's our Knight of Knewfoundland and our Lord of Labrador!

We gotta go find Granda James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Auntie Deb and Uncle Rob's house and eat barbecue together! Okay! Over and out!"

Fourteen Days 'Til Merry Christmas Comes to our House!

Chance and me with our Canadian Tire spruce tree all decorated for Christmas!
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. Grandpa James says his first Christmas was the first Christmas!

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Uncle Zii and Auntie Ambreen and Chance and me.

Chance and me are having fun. Uncle Zii and Auntie Ambreen came to dinner. So did Grandpa John and Grandma Kathy. We had special food 'cuz Merry Christmas is coming in fourteen days! We had roasted chicken and mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes and salad. We had cheesecake with bakeapples on top!

Our cheesecake is smothered in bakeapples. Some people call them cloudberries, you know. It tastes twice as yummy 'cuz it has two names!

Then we decorated our Canadian Tire spruce tree with pretty balls and ornaments. Chance tries to lick them 'cuz they're shiny but we don't eat Christmas ornaments. They're not in Canada's Food Guide, you know.

We sang Christmas songs while we decorate the tree. We sang Deck the Halls, O Christmas Tree and my favouritest song, Silent Knights. I don't know why the knights have to be silent when the sheep and the little drummer boy are making all that noise!

After the tree was finished we hugged everyone good night. Grandpa James tucked us into bed, read us our bedtime story and heard our prayers. Chance fell asleep during the story. That's 'cuz he's so newborn.

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can decorate our Canadian Tire spruce together! Okay! Over and out!"

Food Fun at Piccalo!

Alan is our server at Piccolo's. His job is important. He tells the chef what I want to eat for lunch. The food is so yummy, I want to eat everything!

Guess what? We're at Piccolo's! Every time Grandpa Reid and Nana Margaret come to visit we go to Piccolo's to eat lunch. Piccolo's has Italian food. Grandpa James says Italian food comes from Italy but we can't believe him 'cuz he makes up stuff all the time. I know where Italian food really comes from. It comes from the kitchen!

Look, quick before it's gone! Lasagna gets eaten up really fast!

Grandpa James always eats lasagna. Lasagna is yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide, you know.

Over the lips and through the gums, look out tummy, eggplant Parmesan, here it comes!

Grandpa Reid and Nana Margaret like the eggplant Parmesan. We all like the Garlic Fingers. I could eat them all day! I hold one up high in the air and I say, "Look out, Garlic Finger! I'm gonna eat you a-l-l up! And then I do! Grandpa James says, "Charles don't eat like a pig." I'm not a pig, I'm a bear cub. Grandpa James says silly things sometimes.

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Garlic Fingers and lasagna, too. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Piccalo's together! Okay! Over and out!"

Eating Dim Sum at Sky Dragon

Our buddies at Sky Dragon are William, Steven, Kathy, Andy and Sunny.
Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live with my buddy, Grandpa James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. We live on Sparkle Road. That's right next to Sandwich Street. That's in Windsor. I know where Windsor is--it's in O Canada.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Sometimes we go to Toronto. We ride on VIA Rail. I love the train but we don't eat trains, you know.  That would be silly, wouldn't it? They're not in Canada's Food Guide.

Our train goes from Windsor to Toronto. When we get to London, we're halfway already!

We have lots of things to do in TO. One of our favouritest things is to eat at Sky Dragon. They have very yummy food. It's Chinese food. The nice servers bring us Dim Sum. I know what Dim Sum means. It means 'choose to your heart's content.' I like to choose my food. It's fun. I always eat Har Gow and Beef Balls and Cheung Fun, too. Chance doesn't have any teeth, he's so newborn. He licks my Char Sui Bao and makes squeaky noises 'cuz he's happy. Dim Sum always makes us happy!

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat Dim Sum at Sky Dragon. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can eat at Sky Dragon together! Okay! Over and out!"

Our Jack-O'-Lantern

I know where Jack-O-Lanterns come from. They come from pumpkins.

He's so newborn he doesn't even have any teeth! I look after Chance, too. He's a handful! He climbs way high and can't get down. He makes little squawky noises 'cuz he's afraid. I have to say, "My son! Come down from there this instant!" Then I have to help him.

Know what? We're getting ready for Hallowe'en. We're gonna make a Jack-O'-Lantern. This is how you make one. First, you have to buy a pumpkin at Westside Foods. That's on Sandwich Street. We can walk there from our house.

Jack-O'-Lanterns are born as pumpkins. Pumpkins are a fruit, you know.

There are lots of pumpkins at Westside Foods. We pick a nice one. We want our Jack-O'-Lantern to look v-e-r-y scary.

Okay. First we have to cut off the top of the pumpkin. We use a knife. We have to be careful 'cuz knives are sharp and we could cut ourselves. That would not be good.

Next we have to scoop out the seeds but we don't throw them away. They're good to eat, you know. We save them. We will toast them in the oven. Roasted pumpkin seeds are  yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.
Now we cut some eyes and a mouth for our Jack-O'-Lantern. Then we put a candle inside. Our Jack-O'-Lantern is really scary. We turn off the lights and Grandpa James tells us the story of Stingy Jack. He made the first Jack-O'-Lantern, you know. It's a scary story, just like our pumpkin!

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can make Jack-O'-Lanterns together! Okay! Over and out!"

Mi Casita Recommended by Charles and Chance

Chance and me love to eat at Mi Casita.

Guess where me and Chance are? We're at Mi Casita. It's a very nice restaurant on Wyandotte Street. The food is very yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide, you know. All the food is from El Salvador. I know where El Salvador is. It's not in Canada and it's not in France. El Salvador is far away.
Queso flameado.

We get to eat queso flameado and rice and beans and pupusas and we get to drink mango flavoured pop, too.
I can eat all the pupusas. That's 'cuz I'm as hungry as a bear.

When we go to a restaurant we tell the server what we want to eat. Miss Tanya is our server. She tells the chef and the chef makes our food. Servers have very important jobs, you know. I could be a server when I grow up. I could ask people what they would like to eat and drink. I would say, "Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. I'll be your server tonight. What would you like to drink?"

Miss Tanya puts some hot sauce on my beans. I l-o-v-e hot sauce, don't you?

If I eat too fast, Grandpa James says, "My son! Don't eat like a pig!" Grandpa James says silly things sometimes. I'm not a pig. I'm a bear cub. Maybe Grandpa James needs new glasses.

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be kind to friends and neighbours. Then you can eat pupusas and drink mango pop. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We go to Mi Casita and eat dinner! Okay! Over and out!"

The Big Adventure Continues: Charles and Chance Visit Newfoundland

Chance and me play with an airplane at the airport in Halifax. Chance is so newborn he thinks he can ride outside on the wings but he'll fall off.

Miss Amelie has an important job at Air Canada. She is the purser.

We're flying to Newfoundland and Labrador! Well, just Newfoundland. Labrador is the other part. Grandpa James says we'll go there sometime. Miss Amelie is the purser in charge of this Air Canada flight. She's the boss of the passengers. She tells us to sit up and put on our seat belts so the plane can go. Miss Amelie is very nice. She brings us juice to drink. Know what? I'm gonna tell you a secret. I think Miss Amelie is a princess!

When we get to St. John's we're as hungry as bears, you know. Uncle Glen picks us up at the airport. It's a really big place and the workmen are making it bigger!

When we get home we have lunch. My tummy is growling. I'm really truly as hungry as a bear! Know what we get to eat for lunch? We get to eat seal flipper pie. I l-o-v-e seal flipper pie. It's yummy and that's one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide, you know. Grandpa James says seal flipper pie is full of Vitamin C. That's good for growing bear cubs like me.

Seal flipper pie is one of my favouritest foods. We get it at Goodbid's Grocery Store.
Because I ate all my seal flipper pie, I get to have bakeapple pie for dessert. I l-o-v-e bakeapple pie! Some people call them cloudberries, you know. They're not from Newfoundland. They're from Away. I don't know where Away is but it is pretty far from Newfoundland.

I say, "Look out, bakeapple pie! This is me, Charles the bear cub! I'm gonna eat you all up! Good-bye bakeapple pie! Over the lips and through the gums, look out tummy, here it comes!" And then I do a magic trick. I make the bakeapple pie disappear. I could be a magician when I grow up. I could make bakeapple pies disappear. That would be an important job. No. Wait! I want to be the Minister of Pie Eating. That's a  really good job!

Grandpa James is very fussy. He says he only likes two kinds of pie: Hot and cold. He thinks that funny.

Now that we're full of good food, we can explore Newfoundland. Remember it rhymes with the word 'understand.' I know where Newfoundland is. It's in O Canada. It's the first province on the right. I learned that at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre,  you know.

Oh. Wait!

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Use your indoor voice when you fly in airplanes. I know! come over to our house and play with us! We can go to Uncle Glen's house and eat seal flipper pie and bakeapple pie! Okay! Over and out!"

Visiting the Cardoliogy Clinic

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. That's right by Sandwich Street in Olde Sandwich Towne. That's in Windsor, you know. I know where Windsor is. It's in O Canada. James is really old. Grandpa James was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful! He doesn't have any teeth, yet. He doesn't even have a tail! Chance takes off his diaper and climbs way high on things and can't get down. I have to help him. I say, "My son! Come down from there this instant!" Chance makes little squawky noises when he's sad or afraid and little squeaky noises when he's happy.

Today we're visiting the cardiologist. Know what? I'm getting my blood pressure checked by Miss Ann. She has an important job. Miss Ann is a Cardiovascular Technologist. She looks after our hearts. I'm gonna tell you a secret. I think Miss Ann is a Princess. When I grow up I could be a Cardiovascular Technologist. I could help everyone by checking their hearts. I could use a sphygmomanometer to take everyone's blood pressure.

I would give everyone a nice ultrasound, too. That's a movie of my heart. Miss Ann says my blood pressure is perfect. That means my heart is happy and healthy. My movie is good, too!

If you want to have a good heart you have to eat from all four food groups in Canada's Food Guide. I know the four food groups: Yummy, Sweet, Sticky and Nasty. I don't like to eat nasty foods, like broccolis and sauerkrauts, but I hold my nose and take two bites, anyway. Miss Sephorah is my teacher at the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre and she taught all of us about the four food groups.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Read Canada's Food Guide. Eat from all four food groups. Then you can have a box of Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can visit Miss Ann and get our blood pressure checked.  We can have an ultrasound, too. That would be fun! Okay! Over and out!"

Lunch at Sky Dragon and the Scarlet Ibis

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. He climbs way high and then he can't get down. Chance makes little squawky noises when he's afraid. I have to help him get down. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

When we go to Toronto, we get to eat at the Scarlet Ibis. It's one of our favouritest places to eat. The Pink Ibis has West Indian food. When we go there I'm as hungry as a bear. Know what? I l-o-v-e to eat roti. It's yum-O-liscious, you know. I like to drink mango juice, too. Chance likes sorel juice. He's so newborn he isn't very good at drinking juice with a straw. He really needs his bottle.

Another yummy place to eat is the Sky Dragon. Sky Dragon in Chinatown. Here we are with Nana Lizbeth. Nana Lizbeth is very smart. She knows how to eat with chopsticks. She taught me how to eat with chopsticks instead of a fork. Know what? Chance is too little to eat food 'cuz he doesn't have any teeth, yet. He just drinks green tea.

Chinese food tastes better when you eat it with chopsticks. We get to eat Dim Sum. I like the dumplings and pot stickers best of all.

Dim Sum is yummy. It works like this. The ladies come around with food on little carts and announce the food. We get to choose what we want to eat. Some of the nice ladies tweak our ears and kiss our noses, too.

Oh! We get to drink green tea, too. Green tea is good for you. It's important to drink green tea when you go to Sky Dragon for Dim Sum. Green tea is in Canada's Food Guide.

James says, "Now boys, Mind your manners. Don't eat like pigs." We're not pigs! We're bear cubs. He says, "Don't wolf your food." James is very silly. Anyone can see we're bear cubs, not wolves.

Oh.

Be kind to neighbours and friends. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to the Pink Ibis and Sky Dragon together! Okay! Over and out!"

The Stumble Inn

I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are visiting our buddy Jason. Jason is our neighbour. He lives down the block on Sandwich Street. Jason has an important job. He works at The Stumble Inn. Jason cooks yummy food and serves good things to drink, too. Every one can come, you know. I got to drink root beer. Chance got to drink milk and pineapple juice, too. They're really yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide.

Jason is a good cook. I could be a cook when I grow up. I already know how to stir. James says I'm the Minister of Stirring. Chance helps me stir. He's so little James says he's the Deputy MINI-stir. I would cook good foods like peanut butter and licorice sandwiches but NOT broccolis or sauerkrauts. They're nasty. I don't like them, even if they're in Canada's Food Guide. I have to take two bites. I hold my nose.

Oh.

Do kind deeds. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can go to The Stumble Inn and you can meet our buddy Jason. Okay! Over and out!"
