Happy Birthday to Debbie

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Chance and me are hanging out at 1976. That's a store on Sandwich Street. It is full of nice presents and jewellery and clothes. Everything in the store is made by local artists. We're here with Nick and James and our buddy Debbie. It's Debbie's birthday. She won't tell us how old. She just says, "I'm older than dirt." Dirt must be really old. I know Debbie is older than me. I'm five. My birthday is on Canada Day.

Chance and me made a birthday present for Debbie. It's a painting of us. We're the two handsome bear cubs putting the letter in the mail box. We're local artists. We like to paint. It's not easy 'cuz we don't have thumbs. I hope we grow thumbs when we get older. I hope we grow pockets, too. If I had pockets I'd keep Smarties in them.

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario? That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Do good deeds. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play with us! We can do good deeds together! Okay! Over and out!"

The Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's forgetful and really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? This is me with the gang from the Scruffy Maple Day Care Centre. We're on a field trip, having fun. It's okay to say field trip even if there is no field. Miss Jackie is our teacher. We're learning all about our neighbourhood. I know what a neighbourhood is. It's the citizens who live in houses and apartments around my house. There are all kinds of neighbours. Good neighbours give us Smarties.  Some neighbours are nosy. They have to sit in the Time Out Chair and think about what they did, you know.

Did you hear that? Miss Jackie says it's time for us to line up and go Tim Horton's. We get to drink cocoa! I l-o-v-e cocoa. If I had pockets I'd put some cocoa in there and take it home for Chance and James. I sure hope I grow pockets when I'm older. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Know you neighbours. Be nice to bear cubs. Over and out!"

I L-o-v-e Gummy Worms!

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He forgets where he puts his toque. That's 'cuz he's old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark.   I have to look after him. Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing.

Know what? We're at Wal-Mart. When we come here James always says, "Sons of Windsor, keep your paws in your pockets. We don't touch things at the store." He's silly. Bear cubs don't have pockets. Now you know why I have to look after him. Chance and me climbed up here to look at all the gummy worms. I never saw so many before! I l-o-v-e gummy worms. They're good for growing bear cubs. They're full of Vitamin C, you know. They're yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

James is hollering, "Where's my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Princes of Ontario?" That's us, Charles and Chance! We're going to climb right down from here so we can get our ears tickled and our tummies, too! Okay! This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Keep your paws in your pockets when you go to the store. If you have pockets, I mean." Bye for now!

Climb Time

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy,  James. I have to look after him 'cuz he's old and forgetful. Today he lost his hat.  Oh, wait. Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left on our doorstep one morning. He's a wee little thing. I have to look after him. He copies everything I do. Sometimes that gets him into trouble. He's a handful!

Know what? I'm way up here on this light pole. I l-o-v-e to climb things. Chance is right behind me. I'm careful so I don't step on him. Know what? It's fun to be up here. I can see everybody really good. I wonder how high God has to climb to see everybody? I bet he has to climb really high! I bet I don't have to talk so loud to God when I'm way up here.

Did you hear that?  James is hollering, "Where's my handsome bear cubs? Where are the Sons of Windsor and the Princes of Ontario?" That's me, Charles--and Chance, too! We gotta get down and go find James so he can tickle our ears, kiss our noses and make us laugh out loud. Chance doesn't really laugh, he's so little. But he makes squeaky noises when he's happy. I hope  James has licorice in his pockets for us. I l-o-v-e licorice. I wish I had pockets. Maybe I'll grow some when I'm older. Okay, bye for now. This is me, Charles the bear cub, saying, 'over and out good citizens!'

The Fountain

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy,  James. I look after him cuz he's forgetful and really old. He must be 20 'cuz he says he was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark.

Look up here! I climbed up  on the fountain. The fountain is in front of the Post Office in Olde Sandwich Towne. I l-o-v-e to climb. There's no water in the fountain this summer. That's too bad 'cuz I like to watch the water.

Know what? I can see everything from here. I can see the Canada flag.   If bear cubs had pockets I'd keep things in there. I would watch everybody and eat all the Smarties in my pocket. I would eat the red ones last. It's a rule.  Bear cubs don't have pockets. Maybe I will grow some when I'm older. I'm five, you know. My birthday is on  Canada Day. When I'm older I am sure I can climb even higher.

When I was a little cubby I couldn't climb very high.  James says I used to crawl on the floor and look for trouble. I don't know who trouble is. Okay. I gotta go. I gotta get me some gummy worms at Mac's Milk. Wait. I know. If you come with me, you can get some, too! This is Charles the Bear Cub saying, Be good citizens.  Bye for now!"

Happy Face

Hi. This is me, Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live with my buddy James, on Sparkle Road.

Look at this! I made a happy face. It's as big as me. Special Ed James says I'm growing like a weed. I don't want to grow like a weed. I want to grow like a bear cub.

Know what? Bear cubs don't have pockets or thumbs. When I get older I hope I will grow pockets and thumbs. I can't eat this happy face. Sometimes I make happy faces with peanut butter. I can eat those. They taste yummy and that's one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide.

Happy faces make us feel good. This one is for d James. I know it will make him smile. If you make a happy face for someone, you're being a good citizen and you get to eat wallermelons and licorice, too. I gotta go. We're going down to the river and feed the ducks. Wait! I know! Come with us. I got lots of popcorn and jar of pickles. Do you think the ducks would like pickles? Okay. See you there. Bye for now. This is me, Charles, the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Feed your duck friends pickles. Won't they be surprised! Over and out!"
