Ready for Beddy

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know.

Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful! He likes to take off his diaper and climb way up high on things. Then he's afraid and he can't get down. He makes little squawky noises when he's afraid. I have to help him, you know.

Know what? We're getting ready for beddy. That's 'cuz it's night time and bear cubs need to sleep. First we brush our teeth. It is important to brush and frost  you teeth after every meal. Dr. Greg says, "Be true to your teeth or they will be false to you!" I brush real good with my Ninja toothbrush and my Spiderman toothpaste. I don't want to get cavities. Cavities hurt. Chance is too little to have teeth. James helps him brush his gums.

Then we get to take a bath. Chance and me have purple bubble bath, you know. It's fun to make big purple bubbles in the tub. We have toys in the tub, too. We have a fire truck and some rubber duckies, too. We get to splash and sing songs until we're clean. I have to wash my neck and behind my ears.I don't know how the dirt gets there. James says, "How do you two get so dirty?" Then James dries us off with Terry Towel. We don't have to wear jammies to bed. We get to climb into bed 'bear' naked. That's a pun, you know. I'm five. I know what a pun is. It's a word game.

Before we go to sleep, we say our prayers. I ask God to look after all my friends and buddies. We got lots of friends and buddies. Some of them live in O Canada, our home and native land. Some of them live in Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of them live in British Columbia. We got friends and buddies in the Knighted States, too. We got a lot of friends and buddies for God to look after.  God is really busy, you know. I'm glad he looks after our friends and buddies. It's an important job. I thank God for all the good things He give us--except broccolis and sauerkrauts. They're nasty. I have to hold my nose when I take two bites. I don't know why God made them. When I'm done, I say 'amen.' That's so God knows I finished my prayer. It's polite.

After we say our prayers,  James tucks us into bed. He reads us our bedtime stories. We get two stories every night.  I love bedtime stories, don't  you? James is a good reader, you know. Every night he reads us a chapter in Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories. I like the stories. They help me be a better cub. I think Chance likes the stories, too. Sometimes he falls asleep before the story is finished. That's 'cuz he's just a wee little thing. Chance needs more sleep than I do. Chance makes little snory noises when he's asleep.

Then James reads our other story. It's  The Bible Story book. Uncle Arthur wrote the stories down so James can read them to us. Tonight's story is all about Noah and his ark. I know what an ark is. It's a great big ship for animals to ride in so they don't get wet. When I grow up, I could build an ark, you know. Darryl would give me some wood. James says all the animals went into the ark in pairs except the worms. They came in apples. James sure knows a lot of puns.

Oh. Wait! The story is finished. Did you hear that? James is whispering, "Good night, my handsome bear cubs. Sleep tight, my Sons of Windsor. Sweet dreams my Princes of Ontario. That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We're going to sleep. I'm s-o-o-o-o-o-o sleepy. James tickles our ears and our kisses our noses. I'm gonna dream about the ark and maybe I'll dream about porridge with gummy worms, too.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Do good deeds. Be kind to your friends and buddies and neighbours. Then you can hear bedtime stories. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play in the tub with us! We can hear bedtime stories together! Okay! Over and zzzzzzzzzz!"

Fun Time on the Bed

Know what? At night time our bed is for sleeping. We say our prayers, then James reads us our bedtime story. He's reading Snow Treasure. It's an exciting story about very brave boys and girls in Norway. Norway is pretty far from our house. We can't even get there on VIA Rail. After that, we're pretty sleepy so we curl up and fall fast asleep until the sun wakes us up. James says we're getting our beauty nap. He's silly. I'm handsome all the time, not just after sleeping, you know.

In the daytime, the bed is a good place to play games. Look at us! We're playing on the bed. It's lots of fun, you know. Chance and me know lots of good games to play on the bed, like Hide Under the Covers and I'm Gonna Get You! and Tickle Me.

One of our bestest games is Pillow Fort. We pile up all the pillows on the bed and hide in them and James throws sox at us. We duck and grab the sox and throw them back at him. Chance tries to throw sox but he's really little. He gets excited and makes little squeaky noises. That's 'cuz he's happy and he doesn't know how to talk, yet.

Another fun game is Cirque du Soleil We play acrobats. I know how to balance Chance on my feet, way high in the air! Chance loves to play Cirque du Soleil. Me too. We are pretty good at being performers.

After we play, we're all tuckered out, so we just lay on the pillows. I tell Chance stories about the Olden Days when I was a wee little cubby. I'm five, you know and my birthday is on Canada Day. I remember lots of stuff from the Olden Days, don't you?

Oh. Wait! Did you hear that? James is hollering, "Where are my handsome bear cubs? Where are my Sons of Windsor? Where are my Princes of Ontario?

That's me! Charles! That's Chance! We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario! We gotta go find James so we can get our ears tickled and our noses kissed.

This is me, Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Obey the rules. Mind your manners and be on your best behaviour. Then you can eat Smarties and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and play on the bed with us! We can make a big pillow fort! Okay! Over and out!"

Merry Christmas is Coming!

Know what? Merry Christmas is coming to our house. She will be here in 250 days! That's more days than I can count. James helps us count. We put an "X" on the calendar every night before we say our bedtime prayers and hear our bedtime story. When Merry Christmas comes she can eat the gingerbread beings we're gonna make for her. I l-o-v-e gingerbread beings.

I love Merry Christmas, too! Oh. But we don't eat our friends. That's not nice. I'd have to sit on the Time Out Chair if I did that. I'd have to think about what I did wrong and I hate to think. It's hard to think on the Time Out Chair. I'm a good citizen. Good citizens get to eat gingerbread beings and drink root beer.

This is Chance and me wearing our Santa toques. Chance is so little he fits right inside! Know what? When Chance closes his eyes, he thinks he's invisible but he's not. I can see him.

Oh.

Don't eat your friends. You can eat gingerbread beings and drink root beer. Oh! Wait! Come over to our house and help us count the days until Merry Christmas comes!  Okay! Over and out!"

Bedtime Prayers

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I help him. This morning he put a bottle of soap in the fridge! Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

We sure had fun today. We climbed trees . We dug holes in the back yard. We rode our bikes up and down Sandwich Street and made siren sounds. We ate Smarties and gummy worms and peanut butter. We played with Uncle Darryl and Auntie Alexandria.

Now we're really tired and it's time to go to sleep. We ate our dinner and we had our baths. Now we're saying goodnight to God and we're going to go to Sleepy Town. I say, "Thank you God for all my friends and buddies. Thank you for all the food groups in the Canada Food Guide, except the nasty foods, God. Thank you for James and Chance. Oh. Wait! Thank you for my Cat-in-the-Hat sox, too. Amen." Amen means over and out.

Know what? Chance doesn't pray. He's too little to talk. He makes squeaky noises. I'm sure God knows what they mean. We're really sleepy.

James hugs us and kisses our noses and says, "Good-night my handsome bear cubs. Good-night my Sons of Windsor. Good-night my Princes of Ontario. That's me. Charles. That's Chance. We're handsome bear cubs. We're Sons of Windsor and Princes of Ontario. We're falling a-s-l-e-e-p. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Speedy Ca$h

Hi. I'm Charles the Bear Cub. You know me. I live on Sparkle Road with my buddy, James. He's forgetful and really old. He was the second Canadian to get off Noah's Ark, you know. I have to help him remember. He went to Canada Post this morning. Canada Post isn't even open on Sundays! Oh. Wait! Chance lives with us, too. He's a newborn cubby someone left in a basket on our doorstep. He's a wee little thing. I look after Chance, too. He's a handful!

Know what? Saturday night Chance and me went to Mackenzie Hall to see S eedy Ca$h. It's a play. I know what a play is. It's a story that is acted out. It's as much fun as reading. I love plays. James says it's theatre.  James is in S eedy Ca$h. He says things that make people laugh. Our buddies Jay and Joey and Aaron and Chris are in the play, too. They make everybody laugh, too. We laughed right out loud! Chance doesn't really laugh 'cuz he's too little. He makes squeaky noises when he's happy. He made a lot of squeaky noises during the play. He took off his diaper and tried to climb on stage. I said, "Come down here this instant, my son!" I had to go get him down. He's a real handful, you know.

After the play we all went to Rock Bottom. I got to sit with Kathryn and Brian. Then I sat between Sarah and Shannon. Mark tickled Chance's ears and made him laugh. We got to sit with Wayne and Rob and Darryl and Chris and Elizabeth. They are all pretty good buddies, you know.

Know what? I got to drink root beer out of my sippy cup with Spiderman on it. Chance got to drink root beer out of his bottle. We l-o-v-e root beer. Good citizens get to drink root beer. It's yummy and yummy is one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. I'm glad we're good citizens.

We got home at midnight! That's really, really late. I never stayed up so late before. James heard our bedtime prayers and tucked us in for the night. I fell asleep before he finished reading our bedtime story 'cuz my eyes wouldn't stay open anymore. I am sure he said, "Good night, my handsome bear cubs. Sweet dreams, my Sons of Windsor. Sleep well, my Princes of Ontario." I am sure he tickled our ears and kissed our noses, too. James always does that.

This is me Charles the Bear Cub saying, "Be good citizens. Be nice to people. Smile and laugh when you're at the theatre.  Then you can come to Rock Bottom with us and drink root beer. Over and zzzzzzzzz."
